Another one bites the dust
« on: November 24, 2004, 08:30:51 AM »
I just took my third deer of the season, this morning. I have never, in my 30 years of deer hunting, taken 3 deer in one season!

In a previous post, I stated that I had taken 2 Does in the same place and seconds apart. One at 75 yards and one at 85.

Today I took a spike buck at 122 yards. He was an older deer and it looked like his antlers had been broken off during their growth period. The buck field dressed at 140 lbs.

The shot was made with the deer facing me. The slug went in at the brisket and lodged in the stomach. That is pretty good penetration for a 20 ga. at that distance. This deer did not drop in his tracks, he went about 50 yds. after being shot.

I couldn't be more pleased with the accuracy and performance of the 20 ga. ultra slug gun. Hopefully the story will continue with more of the same results.

Congratulations Jim!

What slug were you using? My memory is failing me.

Busta'yote,

I am using the Federal Premium Vital-Shok, 3" 3/4 oz. with the Barnes Expander HP Slug. The product code is P207 XS. I tried the Lightfields-Remingtons-Winchesters and other Federals. The Lightfields gave the smallest recorded group but the Federals were the most consistent.

You guys will get a kick out of this hidden fact. I bought a used Leupold Vari X III 4.5x14x50. I had to return it to the factory, twice. The last time I got it back was the same time I got my 20 ga. soooo I mounted it on the slug gun. It will come off after season but I thought, what the heck. A $500 scope on a $200 gun!

I never imagined the 20 ga. would do so well.
