With a full or midsize truck, 2wd auto?
Would like to get a full size truck that is somewhat practical.

We have a full size '03 Chevy Z71 extended cab 4x4 with a small 8.  This has the feature of displaying average milage while driving.  Did a little test driving in the city here ver conservativly.  Got 24 MGP and was impressed.  Returning to normal style city driving with more acceleration, slowing and stopping and it went down to 18-19.

You didn't say if they are 4x4 or not. I just got rid of my 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab SLT 4x4. It had the 4.7L V8, automatic transmission with 3.55 gears, tow package and the whole nine yards. I got 12 mpg in the city and 18 mpg (maybe 19 mpg if I was lucky) on the highway. I really loved my Dakota too. My lease was up so had to get rid of it!

Now I have a 2005 Dodge Durango with the Hemi !!! :-D It has "all wheel drive", "4 high lock" and "4 low lock". I got about 11.5 mpg with my first tank of gas. But I really don't know what I get for mileage other then the first tank, because its been really cold so I let it warm up before I go to work! :?  And we've got a lot of snow the last month so I have no idea. I've heard people say the Hemi's gets just about the same mpg as the 4.7L V8.

I've got a little truck and I get horrible mileage.

2003 Nissan Frontier---Supercharged V6----5 speed----4x4---ext cab.

Like 11 in town----15 hwy

It uses premium fuel because of the supercharger and I drive slow.

 I had a 2000 frontier 4 door 3.3L with a 5 speed 2wd and it would only get about 17mpg average. 19 on a hyw trip.

My 2000 Dodge 4x4 got the same.  Just traded it for a 2005 3/4 ton 4x4 Cummins.  With 2200 miles on it, it gets right at 17.

Like the other Dakota Quad Cab owner, I get (and have gotten) around 13 mpg in the city and around 19 mpg on the highway with both of my Quad Cabs.

My '00 Quad Cab had full-time 4WD with a 'lock' position on the xfer case for 4-HI. My '04 Quad Cab has part-time 4WD (conventional), with an electronic xfer case and a dash-mounted switch.

I find the new truck gets about 1 MPG better than the old one in the city and on the highway. It works equally well in the snow when I put it in 4-HI.

So... if you want the best mileage you can with a pickup truck, get 2WD (or conventional 4WD) instead of full-time 4WD, and get a big enough engine so that it's not having to struggle, but not so big that all of those horses just sit under the hood eating whether they're being used or not, and forget about the little supercharged engines (they're really a bigger engine that eats whether you need those horses or not). And don't expect to get more than 20 MPG on the highway or 14 MPG around town.

If you're willing to live with a smaller pickup and all the compromises that entails, look at the new GM S-series pickups with the 5-cylinder engines. They run well, they're great for mostly-empty driving with the occasional load for utility, and they're relatively inexpensive... although the Dodge Dakota is bigger, offers more utility, gets almost as good mileage, and costs less.

Hello All.  Been a member for about a month now.  Spend most of my time on the NEF site.  I would like to add my two cents.

Currently we have a 2003 Liberty with the 3.7 and auto trans.  Its the wife's and we get 18mpg anywhere, city or highway.  Nice truck, though.  Wife loves it. 20k miles.

I drive a 2000 Explorer XL.  Has the SOHC 4.0 and 15 inch wheels with 4 sp. auto.  Gets 23-24 on long highway trips and 20 mpg anywhere else.  It has 95k miles and gets along great.  I drive 150 miles round trip for work each day and use it for hunting and going to the range as well as 'round the town errands.

Our third is a 2003 Ranger 4dr with a DOHC 4.0, 5sp auto. and 16 inch wheels.  It has 15K miles.  Very nice truck. Rides stiff.  Gets btwn 18-19 mpg, no matter where I drive.  But turn on the AC or 4WD and the mileage hits bottom fast.

Traded a 1994 F150 XLT for the Ranger.  Worse thing I ever did.  The F150 was 2WD, had a 300 6cyl Fuel Inj. and a 5 sp manual.  Fully optioned and had an ARE firerglass bed cover.  This truck got 22-23 mpg on the road and consistantly got 19-20 putzing around town.  Traded when I got the new job, because of the drive distance.  The F150 had 90 K miles.  I was my baby and was never driven in the rain and snow.  I regret ever getting rid of that truck.

Great info
EVOC
The best I could get out of my similar 2000 Exploder was 20mpg.
I know what you mean about those 300 six's, had an F250 with one. Best truck motor Furd made. The 5.0 in a truck was a joke.
Glad you & the misses like your Liberty, now that it has a Diesel in it it sure looks tempting. Me & Mrs Savorino like our 02 Exploder a ton though (19mpg).
