Sako 75 or Weatherby Mark V
« on: November 22, 2004, 05:26:04 PM »
I am ready to spoil myself and by my one expensive gun, but i can't decide which is better.  I am looking at the wood stocked Sako 75 hunter and the wood stocked Weatherby MarkV sporter.  I have not yet decided on the caliber- something in the 7mm mag to 300 mag range.  I want to know what type of quality to expect from these guns. Are these accuracy guarantees realistic.   Will these guns shoots several types of ammo within the guaranteed group size?  I have seen alot of used Weatherbys at the gun shop lately and I don't know why.
thanks

I can't speak for the Sako but the Weatherby is 1" or better at 100yards with there Ammo.

I love my Mark V it's in the 460WBY and have no complaints about accuracy, it shoots everything I reload 1" or better.

Sako is very fine rifle from what I've seen, heard, and read. That’s all I can say about it.

Both are good guns - no question about it - But I have a preference for the Sakos.  I own a couple of them and they are great - one is a deluxe in .308 and the other is a Stainless Synthetic in 7mm-08.

BTW, Sakos now come with a 1" 5-shot guarantee at 100 yards.

I have had 2 Weatherby rifles and 4 Sako's.  All were capable of MOA at 100 yds.  The biggest reason I kept the Sako rifles  is because they feel better to me.  Obviously this is totally subjective.  One of the Weatherby's I had was a Mark V Sporter (blue and walnut)  very nice but the finish would scratch way too easily.  Other than that I really like the very easy trigger adjustment on the Sako 75.  Just an allen wrench is needed, no taking anything apart etc...  Here is going to be your problem though . . . nobody can buy just one :)

I have two Sakos and 4 Weatherby's.  One Sako is an old forester .243 with a Mannlicher stock, and the other is a 75 Hunter '06 with a nice walnut stock on it.  They both shoot great, the '06 will shoot well under MOA with handloads it likes.  The weatherby's shoot just as nice - they are all accumarks in "conventional" calibers like 280 and '06, and they all have stainless barrels and 'glass stocks.

My biggest problem is that the Sako Hunter is so pretty that I never hunt with it, as I am afraid of dinging it up.....The glass Weatherby's go out all the time......

Tom

I've had (they are gone now) 3 Weatherby's----and now own 2 Sako's----that aren't going anywhere.

It's highly unlikely I'll ever buy another Weatherby----while I'm always drooling over the Sako's in the shop.

The Sako is simply the better gun----without a doubt.

rusty75,

While the Sako is an excellent rifle I don't feel the craftsmanship of the Sako M75 Hunter comes up to that of the Weatherby Mark V Deluxe.  Add in that the Weatherby is made here in the U.S. and with a Customer Service that will do what it takes to make you happy you have the best factory mass produced rifle made today.  And if you are going to get a Weatherby Mark V rifle you might as well get it in a Weatherby caliber.  The .300 Weatherby Magnum is the most popular of the Weatherby cartridge line but the 7mm Weatherby Magnum is a great choice too.  Hope this helps you.  Lawdog

Welllllllll yea - the Mark V Deluxe is a more beautiful gun than the Sako Hunter, but when you compare it to the Sako Deluxe, then comparing Deluxe for Deluxe, it's a tough call.  I own a Sako Deluxe and it is just so darn beautiful that I don't think it will ever see a day in the woods. :)

I have narrowed my caliber choices down to 7mm rem mag and 7mm weatherby mag.  I've decided if i go the 7mm rem mag route i will get the sako 75 hunter.  If i go the 7mm weatherby mag route i will get the weatherby mark v sporter.  I guess i just need help now deciding on which caliber.
thanks

There is really no ballistic advantage between the two.  It all depends on how much you want to spend on ammunition, or at least deal with the possibility of hard to find ammo.  The 7mmWby is the harder and more expensive of the two.  Whereas the 7mmRem is more popular, less exepensive, etc.  But in my opinion, I'd say go with the Wby, it is a more unique cartridge, and seems to be the better of the two.  The most notable feature, is the longer neck on the Wby case; offers more grip on the bullet which I think is a justifiable plus.  But its your choice, whatever you decide; just remember, the 7mmWby AND the 7mmRem mags are NOT barrel burners, they are not always more than you need.  They were only concieved for a different purpsose aside from standards.  That is: long range, accurate, and hard hitting all in the same package.  God bless. :D   Patriot

I have owned several of both Sako & Wby.
All those rifles have been good shooters, however as Long winters remarked, I had to have triggers worked on by the gunsmith on all but my latest Wby(an ultra lite weight in .300 Wby).

After shooting/reloading many rounds over the years...I would favor the Sako 75 for out of the box accuracy and quality.  :money:

Yes, please.  I would also like to have some background explanation facilitating such a broad statement.

In my opinion, Weatherbys are darn rugged and reliable enough to be used for a boat anchor, and still hold up to their accuracy gaurantee on top of that. 8)   Patriot

I've owned a few guns and in my opinion there is nothing like a Sako 75 s/s. I currently own it in a 7mm. It shoots a 1 inch group at a 100 yards and my brothers shoots a little under an inch, both with factory ammo ( Federal Premium). I just bought a new Sako Finnlight in .308, and in my opinion it's a great gun, but it borders on a little to light. There seems to be a little more wobble than I like, but it should be great for those little shooting houses in Texas with little windows and limited room, also for walking the mountains of Utah. There is really nothing like the flat shooting and knock down power of a 7mm for those somewhat long shots.

:D I own both, and both are great guns guns, but if I could only have one, It Would Be The Sako.  Makes no difference if its Texas white tails or high country elk I always carry a Sako.

I had the good (?) fortune of being station in Germany for a number of years while in the AF.  I stayed in-debt to the Rod and Gun Club, Always had a Sako on lay-a-way.  I have them in almost every caliber from .222 to 7mm Mag.

I don't shoot several of the guns, mostly because the ones I do shoot cove all of my hunting needs, but those that I do use  are tack drivers.  The .222, a .243, 25-06 and the .270 are what I primarily use.  I don't think I have ever shot an anything with these four that I didn't hit.

Great guns, BUY THE SAKO.

Years ago the local gun store had a weatherby sale. $599 for the MarkV.
The wood looked so good I bought. The stipulation was 30-06. All my buddy's said I choked, and should have paid more for a weatherby Magnum. "The Mark V isn't worth anything in 30-06"!!!
Well I'm not selling, so worth is irrelevent, BUT it shoots so great, and is so forgiving on any mfgs. ammo, why would I care about magnum?
Did put a plastic stock on it, because I didn't want to risk scratching
that shiny walnut....

i've owned my Mark V deluxe in .300 for 15 years and i've shot everything from antelope to elk with it. i had a intergrel muzzlebrake installed on it and a mercury recoil tube installed in it when i first bought it and it's like shooting a .243. i know it must have been a fluke, but i shot an elk on the run at about 150 yards right through the temple. cleanest shot i've ever made in my life. had to lead the beastie just slightly. it dropped/folded instantaneously. when i went up on it i couldn't find any hole or wound and thought maybe i scared it to death. it wasn't until i started to skin it i found the clean, right through the temple, hole. i know one thing for sure about the gun, and that is, it shoots right where you want it. it took me a couple of years to get used to the extent of it's range. i just never felt comfortable shooting out that far. i still won't attempt anything over 500 yards, just because i don't want to chance it and i figure if i'm that far away i should be able to get closer before i'm going to spook whatever it is. i don't reload, so my only experience is with factory ammo, but i get the most accuracy with 180 gr. bullets. the last time i checked the M.O.A. was about  2 years ago at 200 yards and i was getting 1.25. i've always sighted in at 200 yards and it works best for me. i'm about 4" low at 500 yards flat. i can shoot right on the money pretty much out to 350 across- down canyon or up. have never used a range finder out in the field. pretty much guess and go by what other guys have checked on their range finders. my eyeball has been pretty close.
