savage 340 bolt action 30/30 wanting to refinish stock
« on: November 20, 2004, 04:07:39 AM »
hey guys
a friend brought over a savage 340 bolt action the other day in 30/30 win
wanted me to help refinish the stock  all in all its pretty good but it has one kinda deep gouge in the wood behind the end of the reciever
other than that it can be sanded and finished to be a good looking stock
i have done a few stocks using tung oil but i was thinking of trying something else this time  maybe tru oil or that lin speed from midwayusa
any suggestions on what to use  the stock apprears to be a medium oak
color now so dont really want to darken it too much but would like to bring out the original wood color a little bit if possible
thanks for any info guys

DIVR6347,

Go with linseed oil.  Light coats with lots of hand rubbing in between.  Also is that indentation a gouge or a dent?  Dents can be raised with moist heat.  Lawdog
