I just bought a 12FVSS in .22-250 from a friend of mine. The deal was too good to pass up. Less than 50 rounds through with a Weaver V24 6-24 scope plus 300 rounds for $500. I've never owned a Savage before and I'm having trouble finding a decent stock to put on it, the factory stock seems like garbage. Of what I've seen I'm leaning toward a Choate Ult. Varmint stock. I was looking for more of a tactical style stock like the HS PSS style stock I put on my VSSF. I have seen McMillan stocks on new Savages but haven't really seen any for sale serperately. Any ideas on where to look for a decent stock at a decent price?

Ok, you have two way to go, 1st, as you said you can get a Choate Varmit stock and I have one on my 10FP and love it, but it is only good for target practing, long range shooting, not for everyday hunting, too heavy.

Second, Bell & Carlson has what they call their Durramax (I believe thats how you spell it) and they are pillar bedded and its an excellent stock for a Savage rifle. You can buy that through Lock, Stock and Barrel, go on line and look them up.

I have the B&C Duramaxx on my Savage 10FP, it is a very good stock for around $100, I bought mine from Brownells, they also have several other types.

You can also get some very nice stocks from Sharp Shooters Supply as well as other aftermarket goodies for your Savage.

The Choate is a good stock as well but as stated it is rather heavy.

Thanks for your help so far. I went to Brownell's and saw a couple that I hadn't seen before. The Duramaxx looks nice, I'll have to check it out a little further. Since this gun will mainly be used to kill paper and maybe the occasional hog, and I don't mind the weight, I like the Choate alot. From what I am hearing, it sounds like it's a pretty nice stock. Has anyone had any issues with fitting the action to one of these stocks? Also, the rifle I bought doesn't have the accu-trigger. Will the standard short action Choate fit all short action Savages?

My 10FP has the accutrigger and the non-accutrigger model stock would not work, not sure if it will work the other way. I know several people with the Choate and their rifle dropped right in, same thing with my Duramaxx. You may also want to check out the forums at:

lots of info for and about Savages. If you make it there contact RED68C, he has put together a rifle using the Choate stock and I'm sure can answer any question you have about them.

www.boydboys.com has some good deals on stocks. I haven't tried them yet (though I'll be using them when I buy the stock for a Turk Mauser spoter project I'm working on), but they're prices are very good and I've heard pretty good things about them. YMMV

My Choate varmit stock drop right in on Savage 10FP short action. I really like this stock alot for paper punching. I plan on using it for F Class shooting this coming summer.

I've used Boyd's laminate on my Encore and they are super nice. For this gun I'd rather use a synthetic. Thanks for the input on the Choate stocks.
