I'd say that is a perfect choice for the intentions with which you stated. As for:
you're headed for a rifle with a barrel-burner cartridge and could do the same work to 300 yds' with a .280 Rem' or a .270 Win' chambering.
Sorry SS, but that is not true. Sure, these mags are pretty good about dishing lots of powder down the tube (I have the 300WBY, and I love it), but any gun (more likely the purchaser) can be a barrel burner. That is also called "rapid fire" or "gun abuse." One could fire 50rds of magnum cartridges in a session of shooting; just limit your strings to 3-5 shots and let it cool down. On a chilly day, leave the action open and it shouldn't take very long. Even so, in my opinion 50 rounds is alot to shoot through in a rifle during a session. Rusty, look at it this way comparing mags to standards; when you finally see that trophy 325yds across the canyon, would you want to hold over 17.5 inches, or 12.8 inches? (Figures not real life estimates, just for comparison.) I'd go with the latter, plus in regards to buying a magnum period, I would always have another standard cartridge to complement the magnum's power. So if I got a 7mm mag, I'd also have a 280 Rem if I hunt where shots could be close; just to help minimize possible meat damage from close range high velocity. If you end up with 7mm mag, and a 7mm standard, you have a great setup for anything that comes your way. All in all, the 7mmWBY is an
excellent cartridge for the use you would put it to. Good luck with your purchase and remember:
squeeze the trigger.
