New Toy FA 44 Special
« on: November 17, 2004, 12:00:35 PM »
After a year of procrastinating… here’s my new baby. Now I need some deer hunting loads… Any suggestions on this?

The only problem with the pics is that they don’t do the jewelling justice.

TScottO,

Congratulations Scott on what i think is the smartest purchase a person can make,, It's like money in the bank. I have never looked back from my decision to buy a FA revolver. The quality is great and you will get a lifetime of shooting out of it. Best of luck...........Joe..............

Try Uncle Elmer's load of 22grs of 2400 under a 250gr bullet.....it comes right next to .44mag spec's.jd45.

H2400 powder has changed since Elmer's day. It is no longer recommended to use that much even in the .44 Magnum and never was in the Special case. I'd highly recommend NOT using that much in the .44 Special no matter the gun.

Great looking gun! One of these days I've got to get me one. I also like the octagon barrel I've thought I'd like to have one ever since I held the The octagon barreled .475, that I think is the one Brian Pierce owns, at the Atlanta S.H.O.T. show a few years back.

Owning a FA is just a matter of priorities. Some people would rather buy 3 or 4 average guns and some people would rather buy excellent gun. When I bought my first one I was making 11 bucks and hour, paying bills and everything else. It took me a year and a half of dedicated discipline to stash away enough pennies to afford one. As far as firearms go it was the best investment I’ve ever made. Once you break that initial fear and save then buy one. You will see the results of your efforts, it then becomes easier to discipline yourself to buy another.

I believe the gun you are referring to is the same gun he had a write up about in Guns-n-Ammo about 6 years ago? If I remember correctly, in that article, he said he would soon be ordering a gun just like that one or would either purchase the gun he tested. The gun in my avatar is pretty much an exact copy of that gun. This is by far my most favorite gun I own.

Congrats again on your fist handgun deer kill. My first was last year and hope to add another soon. I wont be able to start much deer hunting until the middle of December.

Be Safe,
Scott

Writers buy the guns they review. Just makes sense. They get a super special price on them. As best as I recall I would have only had to pay a bit over $1200 for that first FA83 I tested and that included the scope and T'SOB base. But at the time I just couldn't turn loose the money.

Pretty much all manufacturer's have special incentive programs for writers to buy things well below retail and often well below even wholesale cost. Lee has the best price break of any I've dealt with and Redding the worst. Lee almost gives them away and will in return for a review IF the writer is free to accept them which those on staff at major magazines are not. Redding prices them about $2-3 bucks less than you or I or anyone can buy them thru most discount retailers like Midsouth Shooter's Supply a GBO Sponsor. Needless to say I return every thing to Redding and keep stuff from Lee.

I really can't afford to keep every thing sent me but when the price is really right I try to keep as much as possible of it. I suspect most magazine writers do also.
