Need help!!
« on: November 17, 2004, 07:26:01 AM »
I am going to purchase a new rifle in the near future for deer hunting i like the .308 The rifles that I have looked at are the Vanguard, rem. 700bdl and The Tikka. What rifle would be the best in your opinions for the money also whats the difference between the steel barrel and the stainless barrel?
Thanks for your help this will be the first new rifle that I have purchased.

I'm looking hard myself, and I have decided to go with the stainless Tikka.  From what I understand, its accurate out of the box, has a very smooth action, and is a great value for the price.

Just my 2 cents

I dumped the last of my non Remington bolt guns today. I may never again own one that is NOT a Remington. One of the guns was a Marlin 983T, brand new and wouldn't eject cases. Yeah I could have gotten it fixed but was just so disappointed I took it back where I bought it and left it with him. The other was a Weatherby Vanguard. The target that came with it was about 0.65". There is no way under the sun that group was shot with that rifle. I used a wide variety of loads in it. Several different powders and bullets. One theme was consistent with ALL. Two shots close and a third wide. It has a bedding problem and there is no way they shot that group with it.

I'm beginning to think something is a bit hinky with those targets they ship with their guns. No proof but they could never convince me that used it to shoot the target they sent.

So now I have only Remington bolt actions and suspect it will remain so. My advice is to get a Remington.

Buy the one that flips your switch the most.  Since you already chose the caliber, which was a smart thing, everything after that is personal preference.  My preferences are Remington and higher end Savages.  I do not own Weatherbys or Brownings, but I never saw much use for being pretty.

The difference between blued or Stainless is another preference.  I don't own any Stainless Rifles because I don't see any sense in walking through the woods with a 3 foot fluorescent light in my hands, and if you color Stainless what's the use of having it.  If you buy stainless thinking it will never 'rust', you are mistaking.  All elements oxidize.

Here are reason I love the Tikkas....fully adjustable trigger (do it yourself), smoothest bolt action out there, especially for the price,  super accuracy..their claims of sub MOA have proven true with factory ammo in the 3 tikkas I have, and I like the detachable magazine.  I don't think you'll find a better gun for the money out there.

I love my Remingtons too, but they are all older ones. The ADL synthetic I picked up at Wally-world for $250. on closeout has already been traded. They don't make them like they used too. Only reason I bought it was the cheap price, I can't get an action for that. I was going to work it over and have it re-barrelled, but when Gander Mountain gave me $300. + a $25. shopping card from the promo they were running for  "used" guns I said fine I'll take it. Didn't even bother to shoot it, I was embarrassed to let my neighbors see me with it.

Bite your tongue.........I'm going out this year for Whitetails with a .30-06 ADL Synthetic stock and peep sights.  I will be leaving all my fancy pants stuff at home for the first day.  I decided to make hunting fun and challenging again.  The ADL with a peep and a Simmons Monocular around my neck will do the trick I think.  If I don't get one it won't be because I missed but because I didn't shoot, but who cares.

I've had a Browning A-bolt, a Remingotn 700, a Savage 110, and currently a Ruger 77 MK2. All were in 30/06. I like the Ruger the best out of the group, with the Browning a close second. Pick them all up, and buy the one that 'feels' best. You'll know it when you find it.

In general, most of the name brand rifles shoot well so it is a tossup as to which one to get. As noted by daddywpb, pick the one that feels right to you and go with it. If you can't make up your mind (making a decision of which firearm to get is indeed something not to be taken lightly), get all three which is what I did for my 12 gauge shotgun. Now my problem is deciding which one to take afield which is a nice problem to have.

Blued vs. stainless, go with what floats you. I have all blued rifles and they seem to shoot as well as stainless barrels and I never felt a compelling need for stainless though it does look kind of cool at the range.

If your willing to spend the money, buy a Sako 75s/s and be done with it. It's the best I've ever owned. I wanted to get the new Tikka T3 and couldn't find one so I switched and bought a Howa 1500s/s and have been very pleased, don't know if you can find a better gun for the price, it's hard to find a stainless gun that shoots solid 1 to sub 1 inch groups at 100 yards for $500 or less, and I'm a solid Sako man, but it's a great alternative, and in my opinion stainless is the only way to go, less chance for rust and corrosion, and thats the last thing I want to worry about when I'm sitting in a rain or snow storm for 2 to 3 hours. I my self am getting rid of all my blued guns and replacing them with stainless.
