SCOPE FOR REMINGTON MOUNTAIN 7MM-08
« on: November 16, 2004, 04:13:26 AM »
This is my stalking gun and I need advice on which of the following scopes to choose.
1)Leupold VX-II 2-7
2)Leupold VX-II 3-9
3)Leupold M-8 6X Fixed Power

I like the idea of fixed power for a stalking gun because you can shoulder the gun and don't have to worry about adjustment.  I just don't know if 6x is too much power.

thanks for the advice.

Either the 2x7 or 3x9 compact. You can set it at 2 or 3 and leave it there.

I have the Leupold Vari-X 2 3-9 on mine and it works great. Like the man said I usuall leave mine on the lowest setting.

If those are the only three scopes under consideration you have them listed in exactly the correct order. For a stalking rifle the 6X is a very poor choice, FOV is just too limited unless you stalk in mighty open terrain.

My R700 LSS Mtn. Rifle wears a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7. Seems a very natural and proper choice for the rifle. I think the 2-7 would best serve you but the 3-9 will do fine also. For sure get one or the other.

rusty75,

I mounted a 6-24 on my granddaughter's 7mm-08.  Of course she uses it for both hunting and silhouette shooting.  Works great in the brush of north-eastern California.  Two deer and two Wild Boar show how effective she is with it.  Lawdog

I would suggest the Burris Fullfield II 3x9x40 or 3x9x50. In the woods in low ligth they are really hard to beat for the money,$199 and $261. Never looked at the lower powers, but if they are like the others, you will be very happy.

How about a VX2 1x4? You can't screw up on the magnification and since it's for stalking how much magnification do you need?

rusty75;

I used a fixed 6X power for at least 10years on my 7mm-08. I worked out very well on my Model 7FS. Shot many deer with it.
If I may make a suggestion, how about a VXIII in  2.5X8X36. Avery good scope with a lot of light transmission. I'm a fixed power guy on most of my scopes but find this one a very good variable and very light weight.
Just thought I would put my 2 cents in.

I would think the Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm would be dandy!
