should i make the jump up to freedom arms?
« on: November 10, 2004, 01:41:56 PM »
given my recent experiences with my rugers,  i am thinking about sending a few of my other guns down the road and start to look for a f.a. it is a big purchase, and a lot of money for me.   to say i am a little anxious about it is an understatement.

what do you guys think about it?

for those of you who have gone down that road, you think it was worth it?    and, would you do it all over again if you had the option?

I have one and yes would do it all over again however...

it also represents a very significant investment for this shooter and while I'm not afraid to use it, it is not the kind of gun I'm comfortable banging around the back 40 with while cutting firewood and so forth so I still keep a Ruger 45 around.

In my opinion FA are worth their cost. I bought my first one about 4 or 5 years ago and since I’ve tried to save and buy one a year. When forked out the cach for my first one that was the most I had ever paid for a gun and to be honest it made me sick to my stomach. That was the most cash I’d ever paid for a gun. Once she came in that feeling completely went away and haven’t though of it until reading this thread. It’s hard to justify to people that a particular gun costing 3 or 4 times a Ruger in the same caliber is worth the cost. The fit, finish, strength, consistent gun to gun accuracy are all worth it.

I think if it means you selling off a few guns and or adding a little cash along with it you will not regret your choice. The only problem with owning a FA is that no other single actions feel good anymore. The others just feel clunky.

Be Safe,
Scott

Man...do I envy you!

I've had my eye on a FA .22 rimfire for a LONG time now.  But, I'm trying to figure out how to convince the better-half that this is the last handgun I'll ever need.  Unfortunately, I've told her that six times already this year...

Keep hope alive!

Myron---you scored big time!!! I have a mod. 83 in .454 and mod. 97 in .22lr----and am keeping an eye out for just what you found!!!! You will not be disappointed---except for the fact that your Rugers will now not be as much fun to shoot!!!---Let me know when you get tired of that lowly.44, though. Heheheheh  pg

You're going to be so spoiled!  I have two model 83's, both in 44 Mag.  Both have been done up pretty by Mag-na-port, one as a stalker and one as a predator.  Absolutely love em!  44 Man

You will not be sorry, I have an 83 in 454 that I love dearly.  I look forward to buying some more but I have been picking up other odds and ends lately so I guess I need to focus again.  Enjoy it, it will definetely spoil you.  GS

I too lucked into an FA, a 7.5" Field Grade 454 for $900.  I can not believe the difference between this gun and anything else I've ever handled.  Kind of makes all my Rugers feel cheap and nasty.

I agree with you bpjon.

The first SA I bought was a single6 and I was tickled pink. The second one I bought was a FA 454 with 45LC cylinder. After becoming accustomed to FA I could no longer force myself to look at Ruger. I’d rather save for a year and buy one FA than buy and handful of Rugers. I don’t think Rugers are bad guns, I just wouldn’t be happy knowing I just bought a gun in a caliber that FA offers. It’s one of those things… if you have never been exposed to it you won’t miss it but once you had a taste it’s all over. I’m just happy that no one makes a DA that’s comparable to FA, I’d really be in poor house then.

I've heard several people claim they have owned FA guns and were not impressed and just as soon own another brand...but I don't understand it. Maybe they think it cost too much money to put to good use in the field... dunno...
