Help on possible scope prob, elite 4200
« on: November 10, 2004, 07:54:21 AM »
I have a Rem 700 BDL SS with a 24" barrel. On top is a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5x10x40 sitting on Leupold dual dovetail bases with medium rings. The problem is I can see the barrel in the bottom portion of the FOV on 2.5-4.5 power. It takes up 1/4 of the sight picture. I have never had this problem on any of my guns.

Is it the wide angle thats picking up the barrel? Gun is holding .5" groups at 100 yds off the bench and has taken 2 deer so far this year under 70 yds.

Thanks

I have an Elite 3200 1.5x-4.5x-32mm with Warne Quick Detachable rings on my Winchester M70 Classic Stainless in n.375H&H Mag and the same thing happens when the power is in the 1.5 to about 3x or so range.

I don't know the height of your scope rings, but essentially any way you look at it, when the power is low like 2.5 or so, you can easily pick up seeing a portion of your barrel.  It can be kind of annoying in the beginning, but you can get used to it.  It has very little to nothing to do with the scope, just the magnification.

I normally have the power on most of my rifles in the 4x or 5x or so range, and then I bring it up if I need to.

Shooting 1/2" groups is great, and I wouldn't do anything to the gun, scope, or rings.  Just keep on having the great success you have been having! :-D

Yeah, it's just that the FOV is wide enough that it picks it up.  I've got 2 scopes that do this, a VXIII 1.5-5 and a Monarch Gold 1.5-6.  If you're getting .5 groups just smile real big, ain't nothin wrong with the scope.

All of the scopes on my center fire rifles have a wide enough field of view to see the barrel on low magnification. I accept it as a good thing. I like a big field of view.
