Over the years I have found a difference. I normally try and purchase two or three boxes of the same lot number when I purchase ammunition. I have found one lot number of WW, 150 grain in .270 that is very accurate in one of my .270's. I thought that I had purchased two or three boxes of the same lot fifteen years ago. I was happy when I found the other two boxes just before this season. I'll practice with my reloads in this case. It has been a meat on table lot.
I have had rifles that mix brands of the same bullet weight without major problems. When I start mixing brands of 30-30 ammunition groups open up big time. I have also found that is the case with my .300 Savage. I had a number of split boxes of .300 Savage ammo given to me. The groups were open and you would have thought the rifle was inaccurate. But it is a very accurate rifle with my reloads. I have a few boxes of factory .300 Savage ammunition. I will use them for practice and reload the brass. I must admit that my standards of accuracy have changed. For years my family killed a lot of bucks with factory .300 Savage ammunition. Two to three inch groups where acceptable. But after reloading ammunition that shots one inch groups, I will stick with reloads. I must admit the current scope is far better then the original 45 years ago. The scope in itself could be making part of the difference.
