I have a 1895G and I put a Williams side mount Foolproof on it but am looking to put on a xs ghost ring front sight. Problem is that they make sights from .250" to .600" high. I don't know which one is should order
Any suggestions? Most of the time I will be shooting factory 45-70 Gov't and when i start reloading this it will only be a little hotter than factory.
I'm guessing that you mean you're buying an XS post front sight to go with your Williams receiver sight, because I don't know what a ghost ring front sight would be. The Williams sight offers a lot of adjustment, so it's pretty forgiving of front sight heights. If your current front sight works well with the receiver sight, measure it's height and order a replacement that's the same height. If it's too short, order one a little taller, and vice versa.
If you mean that you're buying the XS "sight system" that includes the ghost ring rear and the post front, that's a little trickier. Some of the XS peeps I've seen didn't have a very wide range of adjustments. I'd err on the high side for the front sight, and then you can just take a file to it if you need to. Pick your favorite load, put the rear sight in a "middle" position that allows for some adjustments later, and then shoot and file, shoot and file. Just file a very little bit at a time, until you've got your elevation where you want it. When you switch to a different load later, you'll be able to adjust to it using the rear sight's elevation adjustments.
I sure hope this helps. Maybe someone with more experience with the XS sights will pop in here and enlighten both of us.
