Any Bolt Actions Chambered in 30 Carbine?
« on: November 05, 2004, 02:38:51 PM »
I am only curious to know if there exists such a gun.  I looked around a bit, but not extensively.  I only found a couple guns chambered for it: Ruger's Blackhawk, and the usual M1 Carbine semi-auto.  So if anyone knows of a BA, please post it here.  Thanks in advance. :D   Patriot

It is not chambered in any mass produced bolt actions. Custom, well you can have anything you want to pay for.

In the days when military surplus was a bunch cheaper a common conversion especially in states that didn't allow autoloading rifles for deer hunting, was to block the gas tap on an M1 carbine.  This converts the carbine into a straight pull bolt action.  Some outfits offered calibers specifically designed for this conversion such as a 30 carbine necked to 224 bullets.  I believe it was called a 5.56Spitfire but am not sure.  Military carbines are way to expensive for that today but the Universal carbines are fairly cheap and it's an easy conversion.  Atering a bolt action to take the much smaller carbine case head is a chore and most often ends in failure.

The .30 carbine case head is only about .010 inch bigger than the .22 hornet, and about .020 inch smaller than the .223. Seems like one of these could be made to work. Maybe I'm missing something.
