red dot scope
« on: November 04, 2004, 08:21:47 AM »
Does anyone here use a red dot scope?I am a little slow I guess...but I saw one for the first time the other day at my local Cabela's.Looks pretty cool! For older fellas like me,a red dot seems easier to center.I would like to put one on my Encore 7mm-08.They come with Weaver rings.Any feedback is appreciated. 8)

I have several red-dots. I use them mostly on pistols. There is no magnification, so long distance shooting is out for me. They work great on shotguns for turkey and slug deer guns also. I find it very quick to pick up game with. I also keep my shot to 100 yards or less.  :D

I have one on my Ruger 10/22.  I can really blast golf balls at 50 yards consistently with it.  The ONLY thing I dont like, besides no magnification (not too big a problem short range) is that there is no way to quickly activate the scope short of turning the knob on top quickly before shouldering your weapon.  This means you either carry plenty of spare batteries and leave it on, or you learn to turn it on fast without looking.

I have an Ultra-Dot 30mm red dot on my TC Contender 7x30 and like it.  As an eyeglass wearer I find the red dot very easy to use and quick to get on target.  Also, in the typical very early morn or late afternoon low light deer hunting conditions the red dot is very easy to see and shoot with.

I can shoot my Contender out to 150 yards with good accuracy using the red dot and a black faced target.  The tiny red dot shows up very well on a deer's shoulder also.

I would suggest getting the smallest red dot you can.  Mine is a 3MOA dot.  Reason is the red dot is somewhat larger than the typical scope crosshairs and does cover up some of your target.  Once you get used to shooting the red dot this is not a problem for hunting but it does not allow the same level of precision tight group shooting that a regular scope with magnification and crosshair is capable of.

BTW, my Ultra-Dot is three years old and I have never changed the batteries yet.

:D Thanks fellas for the feedback.I took the gun to the range yesterday and shot a good box and a half of shells.I really like the scope and think its pretty easy to find the dot no matter what cover your shooting into.Unfortunately I am having cataract surgery on the 15th of Dec and will have to shoot left handed. My left eye is good, but my right eye is almost blind. It seems easier for me with the red dot scope. It is tougher at 100 yds of course but I hope I will have a closer shot than that.I didnt try shooting with both eyes open, dont think it will help me.When my surgery is over,Doctor says I'll see great!! Thanks again.PARR
