Bolt play
« on: November 03, 2004, 01:16:07 PM »
My savage bolt (bought used) I just noticed has some side to side play in the bolt (very slight, but there) when the rifle is NOT cocked. When the rifle IS cocked, the play is gone.

The rifle shoots fairly well with 3 shot groups at about 1"

Any ideas if this is normal and if not what it takes to fix?

The striker/firing pin being engaged behind the sear is what tightens it up when the rifle is cocked.     The rear of the bolt is somewhat loose when not in the cocked mode because the opening in the receiver, under the rear receiver bridge, is loose to allow the bolt to move through it.    It's up front, under the front receiver bridge, where the bolts locking lugs engage the receiver, that the tighter tolerances are held to keep headspace and cartridge- to- bore centerlines proper.
