NIB Rifle with dirty barrel
« on: November 03, 2004, 10:31:56 AM »
i just bought a new remington 700 mountain rifle today.  i cleaned the barrel,as i always do with a brand new gun, and my first dry patch came out with blue grease and a brownish black residue.  it took several more solvent soaked patches before the bore was clean.

is this normal for a new gun?

could this gun have been fired previously?

does remington fire guns before they leave the factory?

any input is greatly appreciated

I agree as well, proof tested and/or some type of rust preventative run through the bore from the factory.

Most, if not all, NIB rifles have some debris in the barrel. Proof testing is one possibility. Various fluids used in manufacturing/machining are another possible source. I have even found small chips which were attributed to the reamer used to finish machine the chamber. For these reasons I always give the bore and action on any new firearm a thorough cleaning before heading to the range for the first time. A bit of an annoyance to find the debris I agree but nothing to get alarmed about.
