7mm-08 range/bullet reccomendation
« on: November 03, 2004, 04:17:43 AM »
I just picked up my new Remington 700 Mountain LSS in 7mm-08.  I topped it with a Leupold Vari-X II in 3-9.  I will primarily hunt whitetails with this gun and was wondering if anyone had any tough bullet recommendations.  I also would like to know if 300 yards, from a steady rest,  is stretching the capability of this round.
thanks :-)

Hornady Light Magniums should hit 300 yards.

I also have an R700 LSS in 7-08. Mine wears a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7 scope with RainGuard. Both of the Hornady Light Magnum loads shoot well under an inch in my rifle. However the original with the 139 grain BTSP shoots closer to 1/2" consistently than does the newer load with the 140 grain SST. So I use only the Hornady Light Mag 139 grain load for deer hunting. I can tell you it sure puts them down rat down when you do your part.

I'd definitely buy a box of both of the Hornady Light Mag loads and see which your rifle perfers. I'm betting it will shoot one or both under an inch at 100 yards. With this load you get the ballistic equivalent of the .280 Remington standard loading in the 7-08. Try it. You won't be sorry.

when i got the rifle home i decided to clean the factory oil out of the barrel.  i first inserted a clean patch and it came out with a bluish grease as well as brownish/black residue.  i do not know if new remingtons are ever shot at the factory, but this barrel was dirtier than i expected for a NIB rifle. is this normal?

Yes I believe they fire all of them and then likely run a clean patch thru followed by the bore preservative. They all look gunky when you get them. That's why they warn you to clean them before firing. It's not all that unusual to find some minor copper fouling in a new barrel.

I just wanted to add what GB said about the Light Magnums.  In my Remington BDL SS DM, it also shoots the original interlock boat-tails better than the newer SSTs in 7-08 Light Mag.  My father used that gun and bullet on a whitetail last year with great success.

My Tikka is just of oppisite of the Remingtons. It shoots the Hornady SST light mag better than the Hornady spire point light mags, but both shoot great. Hunted with it last year and was lucky to shoot 3 animals with it. Two deer and one yote. The kills were lightning quick, no tracking necessary.

I will say that I have really been looking hard at the new Remington LV SF rifle in 7mm-08. It just seems to be close to a custom rifle for a reasonable price. Need to think wether I need another 7-08.

I tought that might strike a nerve around here

It really is one beautiful rifle. looks to have a HS stock, fluted 22" stainless barrel, and weighs in at 6 3/4 pounds. I have had my hands on a .221 fieball. It is really nice to say the least. I would consider selling my Tikka to get one, $200.00 more or so, but after doing some 200 yard range shooting, the Remington's I have impress me to no end.

One problem with the new Remington's is the trigger. On my VS, gettting the trigger under 3 pounds is impossible. It actually quits working, "Lawyers" or should I say "Judges".

I think that Remington has finally realized that people do not mind paying hard earned money for quality.

Greybeard, when I found out about the LV SF in that caliber, I thought of you and Zachery.

I shot 139 gr. Hornady Interbonds last year and they shot about an inch out of my M 700 LSS mtn. rifle. I switched to the Nosler 140 gr. Accubond this year and it shoots an honest 1/2" @ 100 yds. at 2850 fps with 44 grs. of Varget. I would not hesitate to shoot a deer at 300 yds. with a good rest. If you zero 2" high @ 100 yds. you are only down 71/2" @ 300 yds.

Rusty75, my 12 year old grandson uses a 7mm-08 Remington Model 7 youth.  Both 139 gr. Hornady Light Magnum loads are deadly accurate (sub MOA).  We prefer the spire point vs SST.  He has taken about 12 deer and all fell where he shot except one that traveled about 50 yds.  A super load for deer!  Only slightly more recoil than a .243 and much more power.  It has a point blank range of approximately 270 yards (+/- 3") with plenty of power for deer-sized game at 300 and beyond.  Check the ballistics.

Indeed, the 7mm-08 is one of my absolute favorite deer cartridges!  So far, I think that I have 3 or 4 rifles chambered in it, AND FOR GOOD REASON!

I use Nosler 160 (yes 160) in my 7-08 Savage.  Good for Antelope through elk.  Took a nice antelope with it at 280 to 300 yards.  Not as much meat damage as with a .270 and 130 grain bullet.

Only drawback is the Savage is not very accurate :(   I think it's the crappy plastic stock that flexes all over the place.  I ordered a Richards Microfit stock for it and if that don't cure whatr ailes it then its on the Auction Arms block.

I was just reviewing threads from a search on the "Mountian Rifle LSS" and came across this thread.

It was mentioned that Remington was now offering the Remington LV SF rifle in 7mm-08.  I went out to the Remington web site and it only shows the following offerings:

17 Rem.
204 Ruger
221 Rem. Fireball
223 Rem.
22-250 Rem.

I did see where the SPS Stainless is offered in 7MM-08, but it doesn't compare to the LV SF.

I'm not a big fan of synthetic stocks (thats why I was interested in the LSS with the laminated stock), but the LV SF does seem to have some "custom" features (pillar bedded, fluted barrel, etc)

Does anyone know for sure if they ARE offering the LV SF in 7MM-08?  If so, would the laminated LSS stock fit on the LV SF?

Using a model 7 (with the 18" barrel) in 7-08, my son shot a mulie at 284 long paces.  He was using a 145gr Grand Slam in front of H4895.  An example of one but I shot a white tail last fall @250yds with a 154gr Hornady round nosed bullet.  And we've shot numerous deer and antelope at closer ranges.  I've used a 7-08 for years and I'd have to rank the cartridge right up near the top of any deer rifle selection.
I hate to tell you    but you've painted yourself into a corner.  If you don't bring home the venison, it ain't the gun's fault.

My new browning micro hunter seems to like 140 gr. nosler ballistic tips and varget powder shoots under .5"
