What is a Custom Gun?
« on: November 02, 2004, 02:25:01 AM »
Never thought much about it until I took a survey last week.  Didn't think I had one, but then I got to thinking maybe I do.  I've got a Trapper in 45 Colt that I've done a trigger job to, added a tang sight, attached sling swivels/sling, dovetailed the front of the barrel to accept the magazine tube cap screw into a slug so the barrel deosn't peen from the screw rattling around during recoil.  At one time I had a Williams Fire Sight front post but removed it and replaced the original sight, painted white with nail polish.

Do I have a custom rifle or not?

There is a great discussion on this here:

If you read it you might be able to find some answers.

so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.

I would say you have a customized Trapper.  I really don't think it amounts to a hill of beans as long as you are satisfied and happy with it. Just my 2 cents.   Good Shooting!

Custom refers to anything changed on a gun, car, or anything made as a factory standard and than altered.  I believe that the term custom could be a short for customer request.  It can be a small change or a complete rebuild.  All guns assembled by a gunsmith will be considered a so called CUSTOM GUN.    My 1 cents worth       Les

taking something and making it the way YOU want it. If you want it blueprinted and bedded...or want one like noone else has...or take a pigs ear and make a silk purse out of it. I consider my carl gaustoff swed that has been cut and crowned, restocked, bedded, tapped, fitted with a side swing saftey and the trigger stoned to be customized for me...even though it is probably considered by some to be "semi" custom...whereas my cz24 mauser 308 heavy barreled varmit gun is more a custom gun..jewel trigger, bedded, bull barrel, etc....stock i finished myself.. both are sub moa and do exactly what they were designed to do..the swed is a light toteing rifle...the 308 is a bench/varmit gun.  The object here is they do what "I" want them to...I ordered them done the way they are....not from a catalog...even though neither one is a high dollar rifle...they work.

I think a true custom rifle is one 'built,' from the ground up, to an individual's specifications.

Castaway, what you have I've always called semi-custom.Its not factory and its not full custom. But thats just me.Most of my rifles fall in that catagory, and they shoot alot better than factory and keep me out of the poor house.

I got the urge for a full custom gun about two months ago.It was a super varmint rig,the outfit was out of the Carolinas.I was quoted 7k using there action, with a synthetic stock. I will keep shooting my semi-custom rig  for a long while I guess.
