Good Factory Loads for RB .454 Casull?
« on: October 31, 2004, 01:43:50 PM »
I just got my first pistol, that being a Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull; stainless 6 1/2" barrel. Anyways, just looking for some good factory bear-stopping medicine. I don't plan on reloading for it anytime soon, so I'll be stuck with factory ammo.

I just picked up a box of Hornady 300 grain JHP/XTP bullets today. 1650 fps out the muzzle according to what the box says. I might get around to shooting them tomorrow, hopefully. I plan on shooting paper at 25 and 50 yards with it.

Anyone shoot those Hornady bullets in their 454 Casull's?

When you get around to shooting them there is a good chance you'll have to beat them out of the cylinder. Not all but most Taurus Raging Bulls and many Ruger SRHs don't work well with the Hornady ammo. Their brass is too soft and the chambers of most RBs and SRHs too rough. This combination causes sticky cases. If you're lucky it won't happen but expect it nonetheless.

Personally if I were looking for a load for bear I'd be looking to a hard cast not a JHP. Now that's from one who's never shot a bear but I want penetration over expansion with large  bore revolvers on heavy and/or dangerous game. Both Buffalo Bore and COR-BON make several excellent but expensive choices.

Graybeard,

Thanks for taking the time to post a reply. I'll take a look into those Buffalo Bore bullets. I mainly got these Hornady's to punch paper with and see how the the pistol does at the range. I hope I don't break my wrists shooting this beast.
