Accuracy of Dan Wesson 22
« on: October 29, 2004, 06:27:40 PM »
I have heard that the  22LR revolvers are the only Dan Wessons that do not exhibit exceptional accuracy.  I was wondering if anyone here has had any experince with Dan Wesson 22's and if you would share what your accuracy was like?

Thanks,
ROll TIde

Hello Roll Tide - I will share my DW 22 experiences with you. I have owned 3 different ones. The first was a 22-V8, bought new at a discount sporting goods store. This gun out of the box shot 4" to the left at 25 yards; even with the rear sight moved all of the way to the right. Sent it back to DW factory. They refaced the shroud and the frame. This improved it to 2" left at 25 yards, with a 2 3/4" group. So I sent it back a second time. This trip they replaced the cylinder, barrel, and shroud. This took care of the windage problem but accuracy was still poor. I sold it to a friend for plinking. The second gun I bought was a 22-VH8. I bought this gun from a silhouette shooting buddy. This gun shot OK, but you had to keep it clean or it would not group. It was also very sensitive of any residue behind the extractor star. It was also very "moody" - one day it would shoot great - the next it was all over the targets. I finally let it go to a friend that loved the way that it felt. When the "Palmer" phase of the company came out with the 10" silhouette single-action model, I bought one of these new in 1991. It was a 22-V10. I shot a 39 in IHMSA with this gun - but it was very ugly ! This gun was the most unpredictable revolver I have ever owned. One day you could shoot it and it would be exceptional - and the next day it would be horrible; even with the same box of ammo. I tried probably 12 different brands of ammo to no avail. You just never knew which gun you would have on any given day - the good one or the bad. I finally gave up on it also. My opinion of DW 22's is this --- STAY AWAY ! I love the DW Model 15 357's (own 2) and the DW 44 (own one), and have had exceptional service with them. But, I would NEVER buy a 22 again. Again - these were MY experiences. I made it into revolver "INT" class in IHMSA Big Bore with my DW's - but, could never get there with the DW 22's. --- Philip Braud

Philip,
Thanks for the post.  That was what I had heard.  I have several DW's in several calibers, but I have never give the DW22 a try.  It looks like that may be a good thing.

I wonder if anyone ever had a good one?  I just don't understand how their center fir revolvers can be so exceptional and their rimfire be so "moody" as you say.  Go figure.

I bought a 10 inch DW silhouette from a friend of Phils in LA. It's the most pathetic excuse for a firearm that anyone of my friends has ever seen. I only keep it so it won't be able to disappoint anyone else and to remind me to never waste good money on a unproven gun again.

Donzov - I am sorry that the gun you bought was a "dud". For the record - the info I gave you was what he had told me - I only saw the gun once - I never saw him shoot it. I had never known him to be dishonest about such things - so, I cannot explain. Again, sorry for your trouble !
