In reseaching barrel liners, if anyone knows of a manufacturer making something close to 1 in 26 please resond. So far, the slowest twist I've found is 1 in 18

40-65 Winchester as in the 86 Lever and using 260 grain bullets from original Winchester mould or Lyman mould #403169. My rifle has 1 in 26 twist and shoots either bullet great. My friends rifle is badly in need or a liner and wants the slower twist like mine. So far, all we can fins is 1 in 18 or 1 in 16 liners.

Thank,

If you can find one of the regular barrel makers set up for that twist in any calliber they might make you liner  in .40 cal by turning down a blank. Might, Maybe.

Yes, Have discussed that very thing with two Smith's that do liners but as you can imagine, it cost more that way. Can't understand why liners can't be had with slower twist to match originals. Evidently they are looking to the BPCR crowd only who shoot long, heavy bullets to 600-1000 yds. So far, I have not found barrels in slow twist much less liners.

Thanks for your responses.

I read your reasoning for the slow twist, but if I am not mistaken, most of the Sharps rifles have a 1 in 18 twist and they are some of the most accurate rifles out there.

Here is a link of a group that might answer your question. http://www.shilohrifle.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=4e5bf20cdd9a218dc0a9edfdba86ef72

Also might look up a guy named Lee Shaver in MO.  www.egunsmith.com

He does liners and custom barrels as well.

Good luck.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll try them out. My diligence in this matter has to come from Winchester themselves as all there lever guns in 40 caliber we have checked have slow twist barrels of 26 or 28. Marlin however, made them in both slow and fast for there model 1881 and 95 rifles. At this point, I am inclined to believe this issue is driven by the huge influx of BPCR rifles that are being relined and or rebarreled for that medium of shooting rather than the smaller contingent of lever gun hunting crowd wanting to use older rifles instead of new offerings. Turning my own liner may be the answer.
