OH NO just what I didn't need to hear. Thanks for the warning though. I just called the # and a recording said if you bought a sakko or Tikka stainless rifle after February 2004 DO NOT FIRE it. Then it said to leave your name, phone and serial #'s which I did. I was just about to leave for the range, I won't be now until I hear from them. We are to close to rifle season to be having this. I am hoping and praying it's something MINOR.

Maybe someone should add "sako" to the subject line of this thread, so that more folks will see the warning.  Thanks for posting it, once again, I heard it here, first.

I bought a Tikka stainless in .300WSM, but I forgot the month.  I should call and leave the info and find out.

I wonder what it could be?

I saw the pics somewhere out there, will have to look around for it.  It was a stainless Tikka or Sako, can't remember.

I have a carbon barrel on my but I'm gonna call anyway.

Thanks for posting the number!

Billy-

Those pics look like someone accidently stoked a case full of Red Dot when they meant to use 4831.  Or else, the barrel was plugged, or the wrong cartridge was slipped in.  Dropping a 350 Remington mag into a 7mm mag chamber might do the trick, too.  I saw the factory ammo box in the picture, but that level of total rifle destruction cries out reloading/loading error.  If a ka-boom like that really happened with good factory ammo, that has to be one in a billion.

This blowup was analyzed in some detail by posters to a benchrest.com thread a couple of weeks ago. Analyzed in the sense of a bunch of guys looking at the pictures and arguing about it but some very knowledgeable people contributed. Brand new .300 Win mag let go on about the 20th (aprox.) round of factory ammo. Apparently barrel split first, no sign of obstruction or excess chamber pressure. Now, I'm just remembering things I read awhile back. Not saying I know anything.

Judging from the appearance of the barrel and receiver fractures, it appears that Sako may have received a batch of stainless steel with excessive amounts of sulfur or with a few sulphide stringers. 410-416 Series stainelss steels use a tiny amount of sulfur to improve machinability, but excessive amounts can produce sulphide inclusions which then act as low-cycle fatigue crack-initiation sites when subjected to high stress.

The fracture, as depicted, appears to be travelling along the same path that metal is displaced during the barrel-making operation and during rolling of the billet from which the receiver is machined. This lends, at first appearance, some indication to what I suspect caused the failures. However, a complete metallurgical failure analysis should be performed to determne the root cause of the failure.

Given Sako's reputation for using the highest standards in manufacturing their products, I'm sure they will do the right thing.  :cb2:

Tikka/Sako recall

We are getting a fair amount of info on this in Canada.  Tikka is distributed by Stoegar in Canada and I sent them an email and received a reply in about four hours.  I have a Tikka 300WSM Stainless/Sythentic that is not effected by the recall.  I just sent my serial number and they checked their list and reported back my rifle was ok.  We are being told to contact the places we bought the guns because they have a list of the rifles that are being recalled.  The info we have is its a recall on stainless barrels because of a problem with the metallurgy.  The company is stressing its a small amount of effected rifles. The pictures of the blown of Sako seem to be from a fellow in Canada so that may be why there is more chatter about it on Canadian sites. I would contact place of purchase first just to make sure!

This is what I've been able to learn about the Sako/Tikka's blowing up.

"There have now been several instances of them blowing up and causing serious injuries to the shooters. They are being pulled from the stores and recalled for Sako to examine the problem. This only applies to rifles made since Beretta purchased the Sako name.

The problem seems to stem from the use of a sulphur based lubricant during the forging of the barrels that is causing inclusions/draw fractures in the steel. "

The particular blow-up occurred at our range near Victoria, BC. One other rifle I know off in the area, a finnlight in 7mm mag was also recalled. My contact with Stoeger Canada advised contacting then with serial numbers of any recent stainless Sako or Tikka purchased, however they claim the recall is small and most/all of the effected rifles have been accounted for.

I am glad I reviewed your site.  I purchased a Tikka laminated stainless last week.  I called the 800 number listed on this site and sure enough my Tikka was subject to the recall.

I sighted the gun in with both 180 gr and 150 grain loads.  Funny thing was, the 150 gr shot 1.5 inchs lower then the 180 grain and the 150 gr had a flatter trajectory.

Thanks for the site and posted info.

Called the 800 number last week and got a call back today.  My rifle was made before the problems guns were done so I'm fine.  The serial numbers were listed in a recent post on another forum here on Graybeard.

Can't wait to take a deer with it...only a week and a few days to go!
