What des AFS stand for on PT99
« on: October 22, 2004, 01:45:29 PM »
Hi
I recently purchased a PT99 AFS 9MM. Does any one know what AFS stand for?
Also I noticed a little bit of play on the barrel when the gun in locked and in firing position, I am talking probably less than 1mm of play. Is this okay? I have not fired the gun yet and don't want to fire it until I get an okay on the little play in the barrel.
Thanks for your help.

Let's see--AFS--A Fine Shooter.  Just kidding; I really don't know what that means.  I have a PT 99 and it is indeed a fine shooter.  In fact, it is the only 9 mm that I have that is competitive against .22s for accuracy.

As for the looseness in the barrel; as you know, there is no bushing to guide the barrel, so some forced movement is possible.  If you are talking about the barrel moving around just by shaking the gun, that, I would be concerned with.

I have been very impressed with the performance of my PT 99.  It is very accurate, functions perfectly and it doesn't seem to be picky about ammo.  It has never failed to feed, jammed, or done anything wrong.

Is it possible that your gun dealer has some other Tauruses to compare yours to for barrel tightness?  If that isn't possible, maybe a call to Taurus USA would be in order.  I don't think I would suggest e-mailing them.  I did that and never got an answer.

GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the word of encouragement. I took it out to the range last week end and it performed flawlessly. I was very impressed with the reliability and accuracy.

I shot 100 rounds yesterday and they all lnded in a5 inch circyl at 15 yrds. now that is what I call impressive.

The barrel did not move when I shook the gun, I went to a dealer prior to going to the range and checked out a couple of berettas and a taurus and they all had that little movement when I forced it.

I guess if it shoots that well, I will not complain.

I got my PT 99 out last night and fondled it for a while.  I'm wondering if the "AFS" might have something to do with the adjustable sights.

I have plinked pop cans from 100 yards with my Taurus, but I will admit that that takes a bit of practice.  Lately I've mostly been shooting 22s, so I would probably be pretty rusty if I returned to pistols with any recoil.

By the way, if you have a WalMart nearby, you might want to check out the Winchester 9 mm value pack.  They are brass cases with jacketed bullets and they run about $6.95 per 100.

When I got my PT 99, I was lucky enough to get the pre-ban 15 round magazine.  I also bought a 17 round USA magazine.  I haven't looked lately, but I would guess that some of these high cap magazines are still available, or soon will be again now that the AWB has expired.

Taurus ia actually running a FREE HI CAP MAG offer, I sent them a copy of the invoice and they will send me a free 17+1 mag free. What a deal!
There is a walmart in town, I will stop y tomorrow and get a couple of those boxes, thanks for the tip.
I called Taurus today to ask about the AFS, it stands for Ambidextrous safty, somthing about the FIRING PIN and STAINLESS.
I thought it would have more alure than that. Oh well

I shoot a 22 Browning Buckmark as well, I love that little gun. I used normal 22LR for the longest time but lately I tried to chamber a 22LR Stinger by CCI and it chambered jsut fine. Have you shot those before? they are almost like a 22mag but the size of a LR. Good for pest control and varmints.
What do you shoot for 22?

I wonder if the "AFS" is on the blue version.  If not, then Dirty must be right.

Melduja, way to go on that hi-cap mag.  I too have a Buck Mark and a whole passle of other .22s.  I have never tried the Stingers.  When I want to jump up to a more powerful .22 round, I go for the .22 magnum.

Hey,
AFS stands for Adjustable Front Sight if I'm not mistaken.
