long range: savage vs. encore
« on: October 21, 2004, 08:29:20 AM »
i want to get a rifle to PRACTICE long range shooting out to 400 yds for FUTURE deer hunting AFTER i can keep  5 shats in 6" at 400 yds. so here are the 2 guns i'm looking at and likeing :P 1) savage 112 long range stainless 26" heavy barrel synthetic stock.2) t/c encore stainless/synthetic 26'' heavy barrel, both in 7mm mag and i would top it w/ a bushnell elite 4200 6-24x40 or a elite 4200 4-16x40. what one would be more accurate out to 400 yds??? THANKS FOR ANY INFO!!!!
later
P.S is the encore avlable as a complete gun in stainless 7mm mag?.
i will not use the encore as a switch barrel barrel gun, so that is not an advantige
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

I would go with the Encore. A few advantages are short overall length of the gun with a 24" a 26" barrel, if handloading, you can increase the OAL of a cartridge to be as close to the lands as needed w/o worrying about a mag. length, several 'smiths are dedicated to TC products, large aftermarket selection of about any product that you can think of. The least important reason is I just plain don't like the looks of a Savage bolt rifle-I can't get past that barrel nut-UGLY(IMO). Although Savage bolt guns have quite a rep for accuracy, and if I'm not mistaken(and I could be) a Savage holds or held a record for a 1000yd group. How close to stock that gun was I have no idea. I don't imagine you can go wrong with either in the accuracy dept. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck on whatever you decide.
