You never said where the first shot went.
One of the best ways to see how you will do while hunting is to do the following:
After you get to the range, put your rifle on the bench.
Run down and attach your target.
Run back to the bench, load your rifle and take a shot immediately.
The above practice will tell you more about your rifle and your shooting ability than sitting at the bench wasting ammo. After all, it is the first shot that counts the most.

the only thing i did different was after cleaning the bore i ran a patch with a little oil on it,then i ran a dry patch through it.aiming at the target it hit 3 inches low.i agree its the first shot that count but what if you need to take 2 or 3 shots?why would you want a rifle that you cant depend on where its going to shoot different after just one shot? i have 3 other rifles and they dont do this!

Does the rifle shoot a group starting with the 2nd or third shot ? Many rifles throw the first several shots from a clean barrel wild, then settle into good groups with a fouled barrel. I sight my rifles in , then don't clean them until after hunting season. Different oils affect rifles differently also.

depends on how long i wait between shots,if i wait 2-3 minutes it grouped about 1 inch today, but im wondering about putting the oil in the bore? when i shot the .435 3 shot group i didnt use oil. i just read also about a guy saying he starts with a clean, cold, dry bore when he shoots for groups.

You might want to spend a little more time at the range observing other shooters and maybe talking to some of them. Weekends are usually a good time to get to the range for a few hours and seeking advice. This weekend I will take 3 rifles and a target to the range and fire one shot from each..... and unless one is really wild, that's all I need to know. The rest of the time I will be jawboning and swapping jokes.
Generally speaking, using oil in your barrel, as you explan it, is not a good practice. Using oil outside and inside would be ok if you are storing it for an extended period of time, providing you remove it from the bore prior to use. Oil is a dirt magnet and too much oil inside is just as bad as no oil outside.
There are products out there that are specifically designed for cleaning a bore.
like2shoot is correct, some hunting rifles shoot much better dirty than clean. You are on the right track.

well,i never used to use oil in the bore, but last night i read 2 articles of guys doing this,so i thought i would try it. ill see if i can find them. i think that is the problem, because it was grouping good before i started using the oil! thanks for everybody's opinion, this is the best forum i have ever used, thanks Graybeard! oh yeah this is what these guys were saying, after you clean the barrel and you start shooting with a dry bore its very bad! you could ruin the barrel! that what they were saying but im gonna find the websites anyway and post them!

If you will look back at your posts I think you will find that you have answered your own question. Quit oiling the bore. Just my guess but oil in the bore would probably act just like shooting a moly bullet. The velocity will be less than a regular guilding clad bullet with the same powder load. Slides down the barrel easier, therefore less pressure, therefore less velocity. Never go out hunting with a spit polished barrel. Always start hunting with a barrel that has had one or more shots thru it to settle down the fouling.
Edit: And quit believing everthing you read on the internet.

well ive been trying to work up a load for some 60 hp sierra, best group so far 1 inch, tried 4 different powders, but, today after i cleaned the bore i was shooting my best load i worked up,and after about 12 shots, flyers galore. i knew it wasn't fouled, and ive been wondering about the redhead scope i put on it from bass pro shops,so i took my simmons scope off my savage .223 and put it on. once i got it on paper i shot 3 grouped just over 1/2 inch.only reason why i bought the redhead i got it cheap, because i had a gift certificate, next time ill stay away from the cheapies.im just wondering if it was affecting my loads i was working up for the 60 hp sierras?
