i was doing some target shooting in an empty gravel pit this afternoon. no one was around for miles and i didn't see any cars on the road in. i was setting up my targets and could smell smoke, but didn't realize thats what it was at the time. later on i could see smoke coming from a pile of something at the end of the pit, but it took me a few minutes to realize what it was. i walked over and it was smoldering blanket. it looked like it was wrapped around something, and i've watched so much CSI i thought it was body. nothing was inside though. it flared up and burnt up before i could douse it. i'm trying to figure out when it was started and why?

You could have a hermit living there?  Many years ago after the war(ww2) there was a hermit living in the national forest in Vermont.  I know this because my two uncles would bring him clothes and food every hunting season.  The story I heard about him was that he was in the war and seen so much crap he deceided to live in the wilds in seclusion by himself for the rest of his days.  This place is in the snow belt and it is some rugged country for one to survive all winter and he lived many years up there all alone.                                                  BigBill

Could be a hermit,could also be the blanket had been soaked in a combustable fluid of some sort.Been fires started from old rags that were left in a plie after being soaked or used with this type of liquid stuff an burnt either a house down or a garage.
 Caint remember for sure but maybe its linseed oil or something like that or some kind of paint thinner or striper.

i doubt it was a hermit, this area is often frequented by atv's and dirtbikes and there's operational pits further down the road. probably a little to crowded for a hermit. it was spooky though. thing was i didn't notice it until i'd been there for about 15 minutes and to see someone else drive outy they would have had to go right by me.and i did feel like i was being watched. for some unknown reason and it seems silly now i made sure that the safety on my ljungman was disengaged before i looked around the area. :lol:

If it was a sunny day it could have been a piece of glass angled just right acting like a magnifying glass that started it. I have even heard of a can doing that when things are just right.
