Author Topic: Howa vs. Savage .223 (Read 1725 times)

want to get my son a birthday present in Nov.,he is to be 17 years of age.
A good paper puncher is what I am looking for. The ammo is cheap and let him be a good competitor with his friends. I have heard great things about Howa and Savage. I like Remingtons, but do not want to pay the price for a 700p. Howa and Savage appear to be the big sellers around here. I would like accuracy with a medium price. Please give advise on which brand and model (heavy varmint barrel). Anything outside the two are appreciated also. Thanks for your time & God Bless!

Savage has a wonderful reputation for accuracy. I've got a larger cal than you're looking for (.30-06), but it'll do MOA easily. Savage also just introduced the new Model 40 Bolt action single shot in .223, .22 Hornet, and .204 Ruger. It is pretty much made for varminting and target shooting, and is supposed to be very moderatly priced (should be around $300 or so). Howa is supposedly good too, but I don't have any experience with them myself (yet. I've been eyeing an M-1500 .25-06

i have a savage 12fv .223, very very accurate. i have a howa 1500 .243,with 65vmax the best so far .434 3 shots, have not had the gun long,bought it brand new. worked on a load today using speer 80 sp hot core,at 100 yards 2 almost same hole,the next one 1 inch away,probably me! i think the best with my savage with 53 hp match was .338!

Insman : Between the 2 mentioned I would go for the howa as I just like it over a Savage, I have one in 223 and it has been my favorite rifle when in the truck or on the 4 wheeler on the place vary accurate and its just a pleasure to have around.

My son has a Savage in .223 Rem. and the first three sight-in shots went into a group measuring just over 0.30 @ 100 yards. It has only gotten better with load work. For the record the most accurate rifle out of the box is currently the Savage. Get him a Savage and with the money you save get a good scope and dont look back. Lawdog

I could be wrong, never having shot a Sa...aaaaaa; SSSSaaaaaaa.

You know. But, the stock on the Howa-built Weatherby Vanguard has it all over the SSSSSSaaaaaa......that I've seen. The Vanguards bluing is Well done, and the rifle fits together like a hand in a glove!

The trigger on the Vanguard is somewhat adjustable -- not really a fully-adjustable unit as they say(it wasn't on the .270 I just did). Though not fully adjustable (to limit 'creep') the trigger is EXcellent on that rifle now.
Weatherby told me the trigger is a hardened part. I polished it with 600 grit paper and that helped, too.

The Remington Model 700's on which I've tuned triggers have been shooters, with some of them putting bullets into elongated holes. My buddy's .22-250 puts 'em right on top of each other, so to speak! I'll take a Remington ADL synthetic at $300 to $379 at Wal Mart (depending on the location) over their SSSaaaaaaaaaaaaa :eek: :eek: And the Weatherby Vanguard was $250 -- Watch my lips, now: $250 ! :shock:
They're trying to give them away.

I think just about all the $250 rifles are gone now. I agree the Weatherby Vanguard is a very nice looking rifle. Better fit and finish than the Savage. But more accurate, I don't know. One of the new gun mags has an article on the 204. I think it was between a Ruger and a Savage rifle. The savage outshot the Ruger by a considerable margin. And I think the Savage in the lam stock with the stainless varmint barrel is quite nice looking. I think it is the 12VBSS or something like that.

I need to make a clarification.... I said that I never shot a Sssssss..... SSSSSaaaa :shock:
I never shot one of those in .223; though I did shoot one in .308 tactical with the 20" barrel I believe. I just wouldn't write home about shooting a Ssssssss....... :eek: never mind!

I just got the Savage model 110 in .7mm..I'm very impress with it.I wish I would of bought a .260cal too.

Savage. It comes in many, many styles and calibers. I picked a wooden stocked lefty 11GL in .243 for my daughter. I picked a Stevens .270 for my personal ranch rifle. Very light. There are lots of after market products for the Savages (triggers, stock, barrels)
The only Howa I have bought was a great deer rifle right out of the box and was on sale for $310. That was a great bargain. Needs a better stock, but the plastic shoots fine.
