44 mag or 45 colt?
« on: October 15, 2004, 10:55:49 AM »
I want to get another win. 94 and want to get it in either 44 mag or 45 colt.  which cartridge is better for general perpose use and for animals up to deer.  I would also like to use it for silhouette shooting.

Flip a quarter heads for 44 ,tails for 45.
If you reload you can make either one work.
The 45 runs lower on pressure then 44 with same bullet wieght.
Probley more factory loads for 44,but there are some hot 45 too.
I have a 44 trapper that eats anything it is fed.
Win. will handle longer longer over all lenght then a Marlin.
Just my 2 cents.

I had a 44 mag. trapper with the Jonh Wayne loop I loved shooting the thing. I shoot federal eagal 44 ammo it wasn't the cheapest stuff out there, but it grouped well at 50 yds..I getting another trapper w/ the big loop, but this time in 45 colt.I had a blackhawk in 4 5/8 that loved 45 colt cor-bon stuff.both cal's work well just pick one. :-)

like said above .... If you dont reload , get the 44.
If you reload then take your choice.
I prefer the 45 due to lower pressures and I have seemed to notice lower recoil from the 45 when using comparative ammo in the 44.
Maybe just me ..... Could have been dropped on the head as a kid or something :)

If you aren't reloading, 44 is the way to go.  45 Colt is plentiful in 'cowboy' loads which are very light, but good powerful 44's are readily available almost anywhere.
....make it count

I'd go with the .44 Magnum. I've used both. The case rim is wider. With hunting-strength reloads, the .44 brass will outlive the .45 Colt brass in the lever action.

I opted for the Winchester 94 Trails End in 45 Colt.  Main reason.....a match for my Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 45 Colt.  The Plan:  take both in the truck when I head out hunting and them decide on the spot if I want to with a rifle or handgun.  My choice hunting areas only offer about a 50yard shot  maximum in most places.  Haven't fired any loads through the 94 yet.  Working up the "hunting load" in the Ruger, then will verify it in the rifle.  45 Colt can be made to BARK!  I have been getting some great groups with H110 powder.  My hunting buddy has the same pistol in 44 mag, so I end up loading both cartridges.
