Ring around bolt face
« on: October 14, 2004, 09:11:39 AM »
I was looking at a new rifle and noticed there was a recessed ring around the firing pin hole that was the size of a primer.  The only thing I believe could cause this is excessive pressure.  Should the bolt in  this rifle be replaced because of the damage.

Are you sure that it's not a bushing?

Why not call them at 1-800-334-4423 to be sure.    You can talk to a technical service rep'.

Are you reloading your own?

This was not my rifle, but one which I looked at at a sporting goods store.  It was new and only test fired at the factory.  I looked real close because at first I thought it was just some carbon left over from the test firing, but is was indented so it must have been made by the primer coming back against the bolt face.  I have seen this happen before and the cause was from hot rod reloading.

Weatherby has a service bulletin out on some of their Vanguard rifles.  Go to their web site and look for the Varguard bolt recall.  Seems they have some kind of problem with some of the bolts.  I just bought a WV in 270 but thankfully my serial number was larger than the ones they listed.  Don't remember the exact nature of the problem but if you have one it might be a good idea to check it out.  No charge to the customer.
