Hi guys,
A friend of mine wants me to check out an older Rem 742 with a made in USA wide angle Weaver scope on tilt off mount. The guy that is selling it is an apple farmer who lives in shotgun only zone and bought the 742 and a few other guns from his neighbor's widow.
I talked to the seller on the phone. He said he only fired it on a range a few times with no jams. It has light marring on the stock with no rust. He said it's the old heavy duty model and if ya hold the trigger down too long sometimes ya get two rounds fired instead of one. He's asking 375.oo. It's a .308 carbine.
I called a gunsmith who said not to get a 742 and my friend would be better off with a new 7400 because of the improvements. I have shot but never owned a Rem. semi. What do you say? Thank You

I own both and they have a reputation as a jam-O-matic.
If you keep them clean and very lightly oiled and use factory rem. ammo they seem to work and shoot pretty good. If you reload for them keep the velocity around 2700 f/s. and use small base dies to full length resize. that will keep them shooting.
I have a 7400 shoots 2" groups. point of aim changes every third shot,
nature of the beast, tried every thing to get it to shoot more consistent.
BUT i have killed a truck load of deer  with it using 140gr hornady bullets.
