Bolt Action

Saw a Weatherby Vanguard in, I think, 30-06 today at Euless Guns and Ammo in Euless, Texas, for 399.  The Tikka is great rifle, I have one in 22-250, and would love to find one in .243, not that I need another rifle, got others also.  My 2 cents worth.....

I dont think you can get a new Tikka for much under 500.00.  I would go with the Savage.  Biggest reason being the Accutrigger.

If he doesn't mind a used gun I wouldn't rule out the Ruger 77 or a Winchester 70. At this point in time I would shy away from Remington for the reasons you have all ready stated.

IMO the Tikka is by far the best rifle for the budget-minded shooter who doesn't want to lower the quality bar. A little more than you're willing to spend right now, but you'll have no buyer's remorse. Spend a little more, buy once and buy right.

Savage is top notch as far as budget rifles go.  They are extremely accurate and reliable.  My .30-06 Savage 110 was only $350 and that included a scope (a scope that I promptly replaced, but it found a home on one of my .22's so all is good :)).  The Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard is a good choice too.  I'd personally avoid the Remington 710.  The 700 is a great gun, and for shotguns I don't like carrying anything but a Remington, but they dropped the ball on the 710.

For $400 you could get a Savage Package, which would include the rifle,  scope mounts, a scope, sling mounts, a sling and a gun case.

Then you might have enough left to get 2 boxes of shells, some targets and a hat.

After that, the proper hunting clothes , depending on where you are, may cost you at least that much again.

Go for the Savage
« Reply #8 on: October 09, 2004, 04:00:41 AM »
I've looked at the field and IMO it's hard to beat the Savage with synthetic stock for the money. A local discount store is selling gun alone for $299. A scoped version can be had for a few bucks more but I would  get the scope separately - the Bushnell 3200 3x9 is a very nice scope in the not too costly range. Those Savages are shooters that will equal or exceed WinRemRug for accuracy. The new ones have an adjustable trigger with owner adjustment down to 2 lb. and it is reportedly a very good trigger.

Go with the Savage or a Weatherby Vanguard.  The Savage is more likely the more accurate of the two but it's hard to beat that Weatherby name and guarantee(not just the accuracy one either).  Lawdog

I have a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06, and for $300 at Wally World.......I couldnt ask for more.......I def, get under an inch at 100 yards (pro. more like .75) and I have been very please with the gun so far.........juts like another guy said......if you buy a $300 gun, then you can spend $100-150 on a good scope, and you'll have a hell of a first rifle.........Just my 2cents!! Hope this helps??!!!

I also agree with the Savage.  My 06 will put 5 shots in an inch.  I bought mine for 350 with a scope.  The scope lasted me about 80 rounds and  then the stripped out rings came loose, so I just replaced the mounts, rings, and scope.  You will need to replace the scope if you buy one with a scope.

If I were to do it again I would have bought the gun with no scope, and then went and bought a scope and rings.  Just make sure you don't buy the cheapest scope you find.

I recently bought a Savage package rifle at the local WalMart for $350. Mine is a .243, will be used for groundhogs up to deer. It has the new Accutrigger. Many seem to think the Savage is not a good looking rifle, but it looks great when you shoot it. They are designed by hunters and shooters, and it shows.

Good luck, and enjoy whatever you choose.

The Savage is a good functional rifle. Stick with a bolt action because you can get a good trigger on a bolt action easier than any other action.

Forget the telescope. Go with a peep or ghost ring. The Williams 5D or WGRS sights sell for less than $50. They also weigh only 4 oz. A scope with rings and bases will add about a lb to the rifle. For a benchmark, the rifle ready to go but unloaded should not go over 7 lbs, although you could go up to 7 lbs 12 oz without giving up too much.

For what it's worth, my current rig is a Ruger Mk II compact in 308. Sights  are the XS ghost ring and their post front sight. I also installled a Timney trigger which breaks at 2 lbs 3 oz. (I would have been happy with 3 lbs.)  The whole rig weighs 7 lbs unloaded but with a sling
If you can get closer, get closer
If you can get steadier, get steadier.

A telescope helps you see; it does not help you hold and squeeze.-Jeff Cooper

I would also recommend the Savage and make sure you get the accutrigger, you'll love it, but I would stay away from the package deals. The Scope and mounts on those are, well to be honest, junk. Get decent mounts and rings and spend as much as you can on a scope. The Bushnell 3200 elite mentioned earlier is pretty good, also look at Sightron, and Leupold. Yeah, it will cost you more, but you won't regret it.

I would still recommend going to gunbroker.com and look for Tikka T-3.  Remember you'll get the rings included which will save you $50 or so.  Tikka is without a doubt the best bang for the buck out there, bar none.

Check out my posts on the Weatherby Vanguard that is being closed out at Walmart.  I bought one in 270 for $250.  Saw one in another store today in 30-06 for the same $250.  Seems they are closing out the Vanguards and are going to carry something else.  I think the Vanguards are made by Howa, am I right guys?
