r/p and winchester brass

i've been shooting in my savage 12fv .223, winchester brass,60 v-max,cci 450,blc2 27.2,and very accurate,under half inch. loaded the same load in r/p brass didnt group near as good? could different brass make that much difference?

Actually, yes it does.  From what I know about those two manufacturers, the R/P, or Remington brass might have a slightly less case capacity, ( I've read that about their Weatherby cases) but I wouldn't know about other chamberings.  Winchester, makes their own brass and they use a slightly different % mixture of zinc and copper in their brass.  I don't remember whether Winchester was softer or harder... But either way, brands of cases can make an extreme difference.  That is why it is crucial to maintain the exact same reloading components when you have found your load, or when developing an accurate load.  Patriot

Win' brass normally runs lighter and softer than Rem'.     The use of Remington Nickel-Plated brass and either Win small rifle or Rem'  7 1/2 BR primers in my .223 has brought excellent results, with 26.7 gr's of wc-846 --which is bulk/surplus bl-c(2) -- with the Hornady 60 gr' spire points.     I step it up to 27.1 gr's with the 55 gr' spire points.    They move quicly out of a 22" barrel and hit groundhogs and deer pretty hard!   I load for nuisance hunting by a land-owner.     He gets good results with them.

Winchester commercial .223 brass does have a bit more powder space. I have some I've been loading since the mid 80s. Winchester sold unprimed component brass in 20-round boxes with the cardboard dividers then. The recent bulk Winchester brass I've bought at Cabela's and MidwayUSA come in the plastic, resealable bags. It doesn't seem to be as good. Case mouths are often roughly trimmed and dented. I have to work awhile to open up the case mouths with the closed jaws of a small pair of needlenose pliers. Then I use the deburring kit and a power screwdriver to chamfer the mouths inside and out. They also need a good tumbling before loading the first time. They seem to have some sort of grit or dust on them right out of the bag.

I recently bought some R-P bulk brass for a 25-20 Winchester. It was superior that the Winchester brass I bought previously. I may try the .223 brass particularly if these last Winchester cases don't hold up.

I found the same results with the bulk packe win. brass.  I run it over just the expander ball to round it out and then trim.
