Just seen in Handgunner mag S&W is making a fixed sight 4" N frame in 44 spl. It's being called a Thunder Ranch model Clint Smith's idea. :grin: :grin:

AWWWWWWW ! :x I forgot about the lock on all the new guns. I also don't care for the gold emblem.I was thinkimg they might follow up with regular production of this gun without the gold emblem and maybe offer it in 45 Colt and 44mag. a well. :grin: -- Willy

"If" i have to pack an "N" frame, i might as well pack a 44 mag, and load it where i want it!!!

For me, i want my 44 spl. lighter and smaller than that, so i'll stick with my "K" frame 44 spl..!!

Guys, I just don't know. I'm with Chris on the gold emblem ruining the looks of that revolver and on the price being a bunch too outrageous. If they would just think of bringing back the 44 Spl without all this Thunder Ranch business I might go for one but gotta agree with the Drilling Man on just loading my 44 magnum the way I want to.

I prefer the older model 44 Spl. Something about that round but on the TR model that just does not spark my need to buy.

And, will someone please pardon the hay outta me when I say that just because someone starts to market that or that revolver or semi-auto after one of the shooting schools doesn't mean I have to get all slobered up to go buy one. Please! First it was the Thunder Ranch Kimber special, then came the Gunsite 45, then someone elses something or another, now the TR 44. Give me a plain jane 45 auto or a fixed sight model 10 or 58 and do the same for a 44 spl and I can apprecaite those. Some of this fancy stuff just goes way beyond my needs, my price range or my feelings about how a handgun should look. But, since this is just my 2 cents worth I could be blowin' hot air, too. Mikey.

For the life of me I can't understand why anybody would buy a 44 special when a 44 mag. will handle the special loads and the REAL stuff too!! And of course, everybody and his dog makes a 44 mag, the selection is just ENOURMOUS! I've got an Anaconda in the safe with a Bushnell Holoscope on top and a 4" 629 is waiting for me at Bilson's in Turlock (10 day waiting period in the PRC). I just might need a snubbie too!!

What they need to build is a "K" frame 44 spl.!!! I just love mine, and i've shot a truck load of rabbits with it. If i'm packing an "N" frame, it says 44 magnum on it!!

S&W these days just isn't building anything that excites me at all!! :>(

Please read my LAST post again. Like i said, i have one!!! And it shoots "very good". Obviously it CAN be done if i already have one.

I use to hunt small game with it all the time, as it's really a great shooting revolver!! Even though i cast 44 bullets, and also swage jacketed 44 bullets, i always liked to buy Hornandy 500 packs, (swaged lead) as they shoot very good at 44 spl. velocities.

I've never seen any sense in pushing 44 spl.'s, as that's why they invented 44 mags!! :>)

My 4" S&W "K" frame 44 spl. was build by a custom pistol smith in Wa. state, and the work is absolutely top knotch!!! The place is called Spokehandguns. I also have another of there creations in a custom cal., and it also is top knotch!!!

I'm not worried one bit about it's strength, as i've fired it thousands of times, and it's as tight today as the day i got it! The cylinder, bbl and forceing cone show no wear, and it still shoots excelent!!

I've always kept my loads under 950 fps or so, as i just don't need any more than that out of a 44 spl.. The same way i did out of the M28 44 spl. i had, and also the other 44 spl's i've owned too.

Another way to make a revolver last, is to stay AWAY from jackedet bullets!!!! It takes more pressure to move them the same V as an all lead bullet!! That means higher pressure!

I believe Spokehandguns has made (26) "K" frame 44 spl's., and i know that the one they sent to S&W came back looking like it had many thousands of rounds shot through it!!! But, it was still tight and shot fine.

Below is a picture of mine next to my Model 29. You just have to love work as good as this!!!!

I have a 3" S&W Model 696 and like the gun a lot. So far I've only shot hard cast lead through it. It is a no dash model and I bought it the same time I bought a 4" no dash Model 686, .357 Magnum.
Don't know why I bought either one but I liked the way they looked in the used gun case. I got a very good deal on both guns. No one in the area seemed to know what a .44 Special was and everyone else wanted a snub nose or 6" model 686.

I loke both guns and they are each very accurate. I will take both deer hunting this season. But opening day I will be using Freedom Arms .454. - J.Solo

Like i said in my last post, i have no need to push my 44 spl. to mag V, as i have a 44 mag. for that purpose. Here's a second pict. of my M19 44 spl., and my M29.

I shot bull moose, Sitka black tailed deer and white tails with my M29, along with a lot of other meat for my freezer.. I always carried it for a "back up gun" when i was flying in on hunts, and i also carried it just when i was flying over rough country. Great handguns!

The reason i can't answer it, is because i've had mine for many years now, and i don't think the shop that built mine is still in business.

I traded a perfectly good and accurate blue 5.5" barreled Ruger Redhawk even up for a S&W Model 624 with a 6.5" barrel. For hunting I use my Contender and have one in 44 Mag. For targets, home defense, and a woods walker gun I enjoy the 44 Spec. Someday may even give it a go on deer.
