The wife is interested in trap shooting and I would like to get her her own gun, and I want it to be below a grand in price. I have been looking at the Remington 1100 Classic Trap, but I would like some more suggestions...

The 1100 would be hard to beat for the price. Keeps recoil to a minimum. Might be a little heavy in the front end, she'll have to build a little muscle to hold it up for a full round of trap or skeet.
I picked up one for my wife so we all shoot 12 ga.. I like so much I might have to find another one.
EAA makes a single shot trap gun that would be cheaper yet. Good guns that need some TLC, they're a little stiff in the action. But lighter gun more recoil.
It's good to see getting the ladies involved in shooting.

I'm using an 1100 and would recommend it to anyone; however, I recently got to try a friend's Beretta 391 and it FELT 2-3 lbs. lighter than my 1100. The gas system more than made up for the loss in weight, the recoil, or lack of, was suprising, it handled well and was pleasant to shoot.

i would try some used guns at theclub.. let her shoot 5 or more guns starting with a 20 gauge.. our club members has plenty of guns for sale, and you may get lucky and find what you want for half price with the features you need anyway.. if the gun doesnt fit, has cheek bite, or is too heavy, or is dificult to handle on the line, youll still not have her shooting with you and be out 1000 bucks.. id go with a 20 gauge mag auto, it should be lighter, and when you load it up it will give the same payload os the 12 gauge.. then you can put the wight in the stock with a dead mule, and not make the gun barrel heavy but reduce the recoil.. get a mec junior and reload ounce or 1 1/16 loads and she will beat the pants off you if she gets accurate with it.. one ounce with accuracy will win over 1 1/8 ounce of sloppy power every time.. then shell want to go pheasant hunting, she wont be happy carring the 12 over hill and dale.. take the dead mule out pf the 20 stock and presto you have a wonderful lightweight field gun for a lady.. in fact she may not be able to get it away from you.. now i see tough minded gals and boys shoot 12 gauge all the time, so it depends on the gal.. good luck dave..

Thanks for the replies guy's..

After handling several different guns she has narrowed it down to the Rem 1100 and the Baikal IZH27 Sporting 12Ga.O/U, and I think she is leaning towards the Baikal..

Any opinions on the Baikal IZH27 ?

DirtyHarry, I have been shooting trap for a while. One of my trap guns is an Remington 1100 Classic Trap. Unlike what you will hear from people, I have had no problem at all and no, you don't need a bag of parts. If parts are needed, they are readily available. I have placed a C&H mercury recoil reducer in the mag tube. ($60) Then I sent the barrel off to have the forcing cone lengthened. ($50) These two things have my 1100 recoiling like a 28 ga. It makes the day go a lot easier. Remember, recoil is accumulative. The light loads you start with are the same at round 300 but they sure feel a lot heavier by the end of the day.

Thank's for all the help guy's. I was leaning toward the 1100, but she decided on the IZH27 Sporting. I will update the performance of the gun.

Fit means a lot in all wingshooting and if she fired both on the range before making the decision then fine. IF not bad decision if real trap shooting on a regulation trap range is what is to be done.

Trap shooting is primarily a singles game. Yes there is a trap doubles game but few play it compared to singles. The gas operated 1100 reduces felt recoil drastically. The O/U will kick far more and the second shot is not needed in trap. I honestly think you'll be trading it in within three months on another gun. When you do get the 1100 next time.

She fired my 1100's(no classic trap though) and at the range she fired a ruger red label and a beretta o/u. She didn't fire the IZH27 though, but likes the feel of it most,and since it has factory ported barrels the perceived recoil should be less than that of the other o/u's she fired.
If she really gets into trap I will get her a better gun eventually anyway, I figure this will be an ok starter gun for now.
