I am looking for a reliable light recoiling round for a small framed lady to start hunting with. Any suggestions would be great!

What will she be hunting? What will the maximum shooting distance be? What do you consider "light recoil"? What do you mean by reliable?
Do you mean ammo availability or the ability for cleanly taking multiple species efficiently?
 
I know a smaller framed lady that hunts all sorts of critters year after year and she has shot the same old Remington 700 30'06 for as long as I have known her.

30-30win, .243win, 6mmRem, .257Roberts, 6.5x55swede, .260rem, 7mm08rem,.44remmag, .308win, and the list goes on and on, depending.

Wouldn't trade my Swedes for any other cartridge, period. The 6.5x55 can take everything from gophers to moose efficiently with 85 to 160 grain bullets. It has uncanny accuracy with everything I feed it. The light recoil has made it ideal for teaching my daughters to shoot a big game rifle. Couldn't go wrong, in my book, with the Swede.

Commercial ammo is a little hard to find locally, but readily available over the internet. Handloading is really the way to go to get the most versatility from this cartridge anyway. For about $200 I got set up with the basics I needed and have never looked back. It's downright fun to custom-tailor your own hunting loads.

Remington, Savage or Winchester compact/youth 7mm08 and if you reload you can download it to 30-30 power 25.5 grains of 4064 under a 139 grain point. Another option is to start with a caliber converter. Get a 308 and load it with 32 acps, 30 carbine or 762x39.

Just like PA Joe said 7mm-08 awsome little round. Kicks a lot less than a .270 or a .30-06 and comes in smaller, lighter short action rifles. She will not be under-gunned for any deer sized game. If she will be hunting bear or elk you may want to look at the .308. My kids use the 7mm-08

WHOA!!!  I'm not trying to poke fun at you, but with all due respect, either that is a BIG gun PA-Joe, or a typo...  I know what you meant, but please check that so there is no confusion for those new to reloading. :D   Patriot

typo should be 25.5 grains of 4064. After five years of hunting I am still at only 39 grains. That's all we need for 150 yard shots. The max is around 42.5 grains or you can switch to 162 grain points and use 39.0 grains.

You still have not posted anything on what you are planning to whoot and twhat range.  If you have a few cartridges in mind go plug the numbers in here and see the recoil.

If you are familiar with the recoil of a .308 the 7mm-08 is less but pretty close. More than a .243 but less than .308, 270win or .30-06. This is of coarse if all these guns had the same weight. If you have a feather weight 7mm-08 it may kick more than a heavy .30-06.
The felt recoil has a lot to do with weight and fit of the rifle.

The rifle will be used for deer (whitetail and mule) possibly bear but not very often, I have a 300 mag for that. And for some varmints. Probably most shooting will be to get her comfortable with the gun just plinking and target shooting. The rifles im looking at are about 6 lbs and the recoil does not seem to bad from the calculators. But I shoot a 6.5 lb 300 win mag :eek: Sometimes it gets a little exciting with that gun. I am not familiar with the recoil of a 308. She likes the 6.5x55 but I am having trouble finding one in nice shape. I was told by a friend that a 243 with premium bullets loaded hot will do basically the same thing but I have never seen one in use.
