Has anyone tried to file down the hammer, or heat it with a torch and bend it? Just wondering if there is a cheap, easy fix.

I haven't tried either of those solutions, but I have swapped the rifle hammer for a shotgun hammer. They sit a bit lower, and add a bit of scope clearence.

I've rad the hammers are VERY hard.  I'd think one would have to heat treat it again.  I like the idea of bending it the heck out of the way though.  It's a pain in the butt.

file away. it's no problem. i seat the hammer extension as low as possible, set it with the screw, then file the hammer nub that sticks out over the extension to fit the extension angle and profile. 8)

I did the same as Fish280, but used a Dremel tool, quick and easy, and was able to use low mounts on my scopes, it only takes a very little bit of clearence.

My prefference would be a reshaped hammer anyway and not have to rely on an extension that can come loose.

On one of mine, I ground away about about half of the spur, cross drilled what was left and soldered in a bit of drill rod as an extension. Doesn't look like much, but  works great and allows a low scope mount. Can't really see it under the scope, anyway.

I've looked at the hammers with a view to a reshaping project. You could grind away some of the underside of the spur, deepen the V between the spur and and body of the hammer, clamp everything but the spur between between aluminum blocks in a vise, and reforge the spur with a torch and hammer. You would have to finish with a file and refinish afterwards and you still would not have enough clearance to cock it under a low scope without an offset.

One problem is that the hammer has to come up from underneath. The hammer has to stay narrow enough to fit through the slot. I had to unsolder my extension to replace the transfer bar. That precludes forging an offset on the hammer spur.
