I have seen bolts loosen up and actually drop out of the action on some remington's lately when being carried over the shoulder, barrel up. Wht'sup with that.

Unless you press the bolt release that ain't gonna happen no matter how loose it is.......unless of course you fail to clean the gun enough so that the bolt release remains in the up position. Loose like with a chambered round ? unchambered but bolt closed ? Loose like open action ?

Rem`s may not be the best actions on the market, but they are still darn good action and there ain`t no way that they will drop a bolt out of the gun unless there s something bad wrong.

Keeping in mind that people on these forums are basically firearms enthusiests...................I have seen some damn sorry things happen to firearms during the deer hunting sight in at my club. (open to the public) This could happen if all the conditions were right for a failure. The bolt release mech. will stick if proper maintenance is not done, or a bad one got out of the fac.

Depending on the date of manufacture, it could possibly be the result of the conversion that the factory was pushing to allow the bolt to open while safety is still "on". Opening the bolt with the safety "on" was not possible in the older model 700's. A gunsmith recommended to me not to have it done as he had several complaints similar to that described in the first post. Other than the problem with the conversion, I have never seen or heard of the bolts coming open when the bolt was closed.

The bolt does not drop out of the rifle, but rather opens then falls rearwards. This is while walking in the woods with a chambered round.

I have a blue Model 7 that does this. If you carry it on the left side your coat can drag on the bolt lifting it out of place. Then the bolt opens with the round being exposed. During transport I use a rubber band to keep the bolt from doing this.

I actually tried this with two different Mod. 700s one short action and one long action and both made in the mid 90's pre j-lock. I suppose if you really got hung up you could have that happen...but at some point you want the action to open...ie to load another round, remove case/cartridge etc. Neither gun would inadvertently just open, both had to physically be lifted and pulled rearward.

Sounds like a weak bolt stop spring to me or some gunk got into the bolt stop and made it stick in the open position.

The bolt doesn't fall out, the action just opens. Could that be the stop spring?

I have several newer Remington that the safety doesn't lock the bolt I shoot left handed because of an eye injury but am right handed more
comfortable to carry gun on right shoulder bolt get knocked open a lot
remington would be a lot nicer hunting gun with some kind of three position safety
