Bought a barreled p17 this past weekend. I already have two whelens and am wondering what to build on it. Now lets not get carried away; I'd like to keep it under a .400, A 375 sounds good, but what do you guys think.

( BTW, The ears are already cut off and it has leupold mounts on it.)

Is the barrel shot-out?

I took a perfectly good 30-06 original barrel off one of my 17's to make my Whelen....I still have it if you just want to restore it to 30-06.  They didn't trash it with tool marks either, it is nice and clean.
....make it count

You might like one of the Hawk rounds. Look at www.z-hat.com. I have a .411 Hawk made by him on a Ruger M-77 action and love it. I don`t want to recomand it to much though as you only have about .009 of shoulder to head space on. I think that the .375 Hawk might be a better choice. ( The .411 will push a 300 grn. bullet to the same velosity as a .375 H&H though.)
