which would you carry?
« on: September 09, 2004, 01:49:31 PM »
I'm heading out on a weeks trip for moose and mule deer shortly.  Today I was at the range sighting in my two rifles.  One is a Sako AV 30-06 with a Leopold 3 X9 scope.  The other is a Remington 600 Mohawk in 308 with a fixed 4 power Leopold.  Both are shooting 180 grain cartridges.  Both shoot just fine.  I am more comfortable with the Remington because I'm not that big a guy.  The Sako is a serious full size piece.  The recoil is not an issue with either.  I'll be glassing logging cuts off of bushroads.  I know the 30-06 is more appropriate for moose, but I am leaning towards the Remington because it feels more comfortable. I will be taking both on the trip.  Do you think I'll be undergunned with the Remington?

Being comfortable with the weapon is the main thing.

As long as you pick the right pill and stick it where it belongs, it(.308) will be plenty medicine.

Stay Safe. Happy Hunting/Shooting.  :D

I would have to agree, the 308 will be plenty for moose and being comfortable with the rifle is the main consideration. Good Luck!

Although a .308 will work, I'd rather shoot a moose with the .30-06 - all else equal, it's a better choice because of the added velocity.

Stick with 180 grain premium bullets, like Nosler Partitions, Barnes X, Swift-A-Frames, Trophy Bonded, etc.

If recoil is not a problem, then you can look at Federal's High Energy loads, which boost velocity by about 200 fps.

I really think either will do the trick with the right bullets, although for mule deer I would probably would prefer the variable scope.  And since I shoot Sako rifles I would choose the Sako :)

For what it's worth, look at Remington's website to compare ballistics of your ammo--if it's factory stuff.    The .308 with 180 gr' projectiles is not too far behind the .30-06 at 200 yds.    That's about how far I'd want to shoot a large moose with a factory Core-Lokt loading, I guess.    I'm not a moose hunter.    The difference in velocities between the two is not substantial enough.....so I'd go with the Remington rifle if it fits you better.

If you want to go after a moose on public land be very careful to hit it well so someone else doesn't put a tag on it.   Hit it well to keep it from going into the water as well.    That would be a headache.

The .308 will offer a little more challenge, but you'll feel better later on having done it with a Slightly slower cartridge.   ....gives you more 'braggin' rights!
Yet a little while and the wicked man shall be no more.   Though you mark his place he will not be there.   Ps. 37.

I'd carry the one I shot the best in the field and was the most comfortable with. I don't think the moose would notice. BTW, I'm a die hard 30-06 fan.
