in regarding the boss system, i've heard that if you get, say one of the shortmag calibers (.7mm wsm) which has a 23"barrel, that with the boss the barrel is only 21" long. is this true? do the browning shooters here like the boss system as far as groupsizes go?

Can't give you an answer on barrel length on the short mags.  I have a 7 mag with the BOSS and it is the same length with the BOSS so that would make the barrel a little shorter.

As for the BOSS, I do believe it makes for improved accuracy but I would have preferred not having it.  You get two shrouds with the BOSS system.  One with holes and one without.  I used the one without  to reduce noise but this option doesn't reduce recoil which is one of the points to having the BOSS system.   Bottom line for me is if I had it to do over I would have PASSED on the BOSS.

thelaw,

You could get very varied opinions on this one. My Boss Browning has a 20" barrel, but the Boss adds another appx. 2" to the barrel length, so it is as long as a 22" barrel. My rifle handles just fine and the stock doen't cause me any agravation. I like the palm swell of my ABolt II Composite Stalker. However, I'll be the first to say that the Boss just doesn't look good on the end of the barrel. In fact, it's just plain ugly. It weighs six pounds without the scope.

But, I like the looks of nice deep blueing and pretty walnut. I don't think the synthetic/black/stainless rifles are much for lookers. However, I am very fond of my Boss Browning because of the way it shoots. Hornady 139g'ers go into nice .75" groups, regularly. I also have both "Bosses" and use the "conventional recoil" version in order to cut down on the noise level.
