338-06

This is a round that I knew very little about, but after doing some home work on this cartridge lately I have found that this is a great round. Loaded with 210 to 250 gr. spitzer BT bullets it is the flattest shooting rifle around. That really surprised me. I always thought of it as a close range big game round. I think Remington made a mistake by choosing the 35 Whelen over the 338-06. With comparable bullets the 338-06 is superior in every way. I would like to hear from anyone that has one of these and their experiences with it.----------Thanks--------vernonp

I have the Whelen  and I am pretty happy with it.  Haven't tried the 338-06.  When I was deciding which one to re-barrel to...the story that I heard was that there was not a significant difference between the two.  Although the Whelen can use cheap hollow-point 357 pistol bullets for very effective varmint rounds.

 I have a 338/06 and I am tickled pink with it. Great hunting rifle. It is the first gun my hand reaches for in my safe. I have to talk my myself into the others. It is a get it done cartridge. They lighter bullets 180-210 work great on white tails. The 215- 225's are good elk hammers, and the 250 is good for anything else. Although befre I went after a Cape Buffalo with one I would have to have atleast 22 of the 26" barrel shoved under his tail. I have never shot the whelen but I would say my 338 has a distance advantage over it.

I've shot a LOT of big game with my 338-06, includeing deer, brown bear, caribou ect.. ect.., includeing the moose in the picture.

  Pretty good round, but all of the ones i've owned like the heavier bullets best, they were just more efficient with heavier bullets. (250 grain)

  No matter, at the power level of this round, 250's are about right for bigger bame anyway.
