Win 94 30-30 Ranger .... Scope? Other?
« on: September 03, 2004, 05:25:04 AM »
Okay fellas, here's the deal

A buddy of mine has purchased the above firearm from a "Selections" catalogue. I did a search on the net for "Selections" and came up with this:

http://www.selections.ca/s_item.jsp?item_id=5873

I am assuming that this is the correct firearm (he will be in town later today and I will know for sure which firearm he purchased).

His eyesight isn't the greatest and he wants to scope this rifle. I asked if he considered high visability sights and he had not, but would be interested in those as well (he doesn't normally scope his firearms).

Question 1: Can this be scoped easily? He stated that it was a top eject, but someone on another board told me that this would be an angle eject.  If it is a top eject, that requires a side mount for the scope if that is the way he chooses to go, right? Also, it does come with a hammer spur extension for scope mounting, but does not specify what type of mount is required.

Question 1a: Would a Tasco World Class Scope in 3-9X40 work on this gun?

That is the scope he was looking at and it can be viewed here:

http://store.yahoo.com/opticsplanet/tasco-3-9x40m-worldclass.html

Question 2: If he went with some high visability sights, which would you recommend?

NOTE: He said that he had trouble with the existing sights, but I understand Selections to be mail order, so am not sure how he would know that. He does not expect the gun to be in until today, and hopefully a few more questions will be answered then. He is only in town for the day, so I was hoping to have some info for him when he came in (hence my post here).

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Chris

(PS: Yes JYK, I thought I'd post here too    )

Looks to be an angle ejection so a top mount would be ok,,,, The sights look to be typical iron sights with the white dots on either side of the blade and white dot on the front bead.... As far as iron sites go I have looked into the tritium sights as I have 2 tritium pins on my bow and LOVE them...He would have absolutely NO trouble whith visibility with them buggers...They are a little salty on the price but I think well worth it... As far as a scope goes With the 30.30 the world class would be fine..He shouldnt be trying anything more than 150 yards with it anyway so the 3-9 would be pleanty of magnification...Good luck ....Lynn
You want a divorce if I go hunting today??? Well sorry ta see ya go...Was nice knowin ya..Dont let tha door hit ya where tha good lord split ya :D

Yes, but I still can't get used to the way a scope looks on a '94.

It should hold up fine to that recoil level, and it has way more than enough magnification.

I would go with a receiver sight with a fairly wide aperature and a big front bead, maybe in faux ivory.  That will look better than the scope, and it should be easy to use, too.  In fact, with that stock design, he might have a heck of a time getting his face up high enough to look through a scope.  If he used a Williams 5D for the receiver sight, it would even be cheaper than buying mounts and a scope.

There is a rear sight called One Ragged Hole . Brownells carries them. You can also search the 'net and find them. The winnie replaces the rear sight with a ghost ring type aperture. I am thinking of trying one myself.  Rumor has it that they are releasing one soon for Marlins.

I would stay away from Tasco anything. For the same $$ look at the Bushnell scopes, Swift scopes and possibly a Weaver in that price range. For the same$$ you will get a better scope. Also, stay away from Simmons.

My preference would not be 3-9 for a 30-30. 1-4 or max 2-7 would be a better choice in my opinion. 30-30 is a great cartridge but it has its range limitations. I would opt for a wider FOV that a lower power scope offers for close in shooting.

Thanks for the responses fellas

Update:

Well, the guy didn't show up last Friday, so I do not even know if he received the rifle as he expected.  If he did, hopefully he ran into someone else who could offer the suggestions that he sought.

Thanks again guys!

$549.00 seems like a lot for a Ranger.   usually pick up a 30-30 AE
ranger for about  $259.00 -  $300.00 max.  in the box.
30-30....45/70...... does anything else matter?
