Dear all,

As most of you know, I live in Miami and Hurricane Frances, now a 145mph storm with gusts up to 180+ mph, is coming to south Florida. Regardless of where the eye hits, the hurricane is so large (in fact, it covers the ENTIRE State of Florida), that the impact will be felt just about everywhere.

We are awaiting mandatory hurricane evacuations, so I will be off-line during these next crucial days. In fact, it is expected the electricity will be out for the next two weeks.

Pray for all of us.

I caught Zach online yesterday morning early and swapped a PM with him. At that time all was well with him. Power was on and off and he never knew for sure which it would be. The storm is moving so slowly it's really giving them a pounding for a long time. But it did make land fall fairly well north of him so Miami should have been spared the worse of it.

They seem real unsure of just where it is now headed but as best as I can figure from the predictions it's pretty much headed my way but it has a long way to go to get here so it could go anywhere from what they say. We could use the rain but sure don't need the wind.

Frances is a female hurricane. Francis is a male. We alternate male to female in naming hurricane. Zach should fair well. When I mean well, he has probably escaped the high winds; however, the winds spaned almost the whole state. I'm north of Zach in Hillsborough County. We have had rains and wind gusts since late Friday. The hurricane became a tropical storm as it went across the state. As it emerged Sunday night, the winds from the strengtening as it entered the Gulf seemed to pick up. Now the coast has the winds blowing the waters of the Gulf back on shore. we will have coastal flooding. The center of the state had two storms blow across within two weeks. I went in land and helped for a day. The trash and debris was stack in front of each home which caused worry about it being picked up by Frances. It will be a long time before it will be removed. Needless to say there has to be more impacting them now. We are starting to watch a new storm center which could hit us again. Forecasts put it on a tract towards Florida. Maybe a way of paying back for those that voted in New York and Florida when Gore lost.

It's good to hear Zach and family are OK. From what I have caught from the National Weather Service's hurricane watch area that Frances could regain hurricane status by the time it gets to you. Not good. Plus now it seems Ivan may be coming your way next. Who down you and Zach's way fooled Mother Nature? Lawdog

I talked to my daughter, who lives in Tampa, again this morning. The last two hurricanes have not been too damaging in her area and that makes her very fortunate. The next storm, Hurricane Ivan, is already making the news and is of great concern to Floridians everywhere. Some areas had over 20" of rain dumped on them this week and loss of electricity is most common.

I think about the longest my electricity has been out here in IN has been about an hour or so. I can't even begin to fathom what it would be like if it was out for weeks.

My heart goes out to those in these storm's paths.

Dear all,

We made it and we thank you for your thoughts and prayers. In fact, It's about 2am right now and we just got power.

Here in Miami, we have lost power, at least in my area, for the past 3 days. Tough conditions as we had no AC, coldshowers, no TV, etc. But at least the winds were not too bad.

I bought my parents a new house in Jupiter, which is exactly where the hurricane hit, and from what we were told just spun there for a couple of days or so. I was worried about the house and also the 20 fruit trees that I planted with my father. I thought for sure there would be some damage, especially all of the new trees being uprooted and blown all the way to Tampa, but would you imagine that all the trees are still there?!?! :eek: All the other trees in the area were uprooted and damaged, but our little 20 fruit trees made it. For those people who don't believe in prayer, all I can say is what other explanation is there?

I also wanted to tell you what an experience it was before the storm. People were just going crazy. You couldn't get to within a mile of Home Depot because of the long lines. In addition, gas stations were sold out of gas, and for the remaining few, the lines were so long that they were stopping traffic. The worst part is since people were going crazy, people were actually fist fighting as to determine who was in line first! :eek: It was almost like a riot! Sure, a hurricane was coming, but is man kind so bad that we should kill each other before the storm does? I was so depressed and hurt and disgusted to see these things going on.

I live in an area called Coral Gables which is within walking distance (about 2 blocks) from the University of Miami. It's a different world here with good neighbors and a quiet and peaceful neighborhood. Everyone checked on each other and made sure all was well.

I haven't had a chance to read the other posts yet, and probably won't until tomorrow, but I just wanted to let you guys know that all is well and to again thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Zachary .. it is good to hear you are all okay. My daughter said she heard about the same craziness in Tampa and other cities/towns across Florida when it came to buying lumber/food/gas. In times of deep despair is the best time to find out who we truly are. What a shame it is that some have so little regard for their neighbors. I saw a lady years ago slap another lady who picked up a "Cabbage Patch" doll in a store when that craze hit America a long time ago. What morons!!

By the way ... you aren't a University of Miami Hurricane fan ... are you? Oh, by the way ... I'm a Seminole all the way!!!!

I only got my LL.M. in International Law from UM, so I really don't affiliate myself with the Hurricanes. In fact, I have 4 degrees from 4 different schools, so it's kinda hard to pick with just one school and stay with it since I've been to so many. Oh well. :grin:

Zachary, Glad to see You and family made it ok. I have a daughter that lives in Jupiter. She flew to West Virginia last Thur. to get away from the Hurricane. She leaves Thur. from Columbus and coming back to Jupiter. She don't know what she will find. She only lives 100 yds from the ocean. I feel so sorrow for the people in Florida. Looks like they will get another go around with the other hurricane coming. Carl L.

Glad to hear all is well. My dad's place came through in WPB with relatively minor damage so someone was looking out for him. Had to trash a refrigerator and freezer full of food since he is still without power. Hopefully Ivan will take detour dead north and stay off shore in Atlantic but extremely unlikely. Tornado's are bad enough here in midwest but hurricanes create such a physcological impact that unless you experience one you really can't understand how it affects the average person. Your case in point on fighting over gas and supplies. Mob rule takes over and people take self preservation to another primitive level. Perfect example for the 2nd amendment from my perspective.

People in Miami are getting real crazy again. What is this, a weekly thing?

If this keeps up, I'm gonna pack my stuff and just move my practice elsewhere - maybe close to where you guys are - where you have your own 100 and 200 yard rifle ranges in your back yard - man, that's the life. :grin:

You're welcome to move here and you'd like South Louisana in terms of people, outdoors, etc., but we sweat those hurricanes here sometimes too. In fact, were keepin a close eye on Ivan as well.

P.S. I hope we see you down there round the 1st week of January (Orange Bowl LSU vs. USC). It would be real nice to show those Kalifornians who the National Champion is for TWO years in a row!

About the only thing those hurricanes usually do here is give us some much needed rain at a time of year when it is normally too dry. I only have a 100 yard range in my back yard. Of course if I really wanted to I'm sure I could back up down my driveway for another 100-150 at least. There is a 300 yard range only 22 miles away however.

Well, last I checked it appears that you will get plenty of rain today and tomorrow, and the day after. How far inland do you live? Have you done any hurricane preps like water, etc.?

Yup I'm far enough north it will be slowed BUT they are saying we're going to be pounded hard here. Opal did a lot of damage here and it appears Ivan is going to follow in her footsteps.

Folks are already panicing up here in North East Alabama. We went to Winn Dixie today to get some stuff to help me prepare for a colonostomy I have scheduled next Tuesday.

The bread and canned meat shelves were totally empty. Most bottled water was gone and drinks were very low.

It's pounding Mobile now and it's 6-8 hours out yet. I expect to be having high winds here in less than 24 hours and the worse of it in the 24-36 hour time frame. We're expecting 6"-12" of rain in this time frame and very high winds. Fully expect to lose power and phone late Thursday or Friday. If I'm not around you'll know we're out of both.
