Scopes & Rings
« on: August 31, 2004, 04:42:51 PM »
I stopped at Wally-World on the way home from work to pick up a pair of high Weaver rings. They didn't have the original Weaver style, but they had the 4x4 for only $9. The price seemed low, and the "made in USA" logo was missing from the package, so I looked at the back, where it said "made in China". I kinda felt like the ranch hands in the Pace Picante commercial when they found out their cook was trying to feed them salsa from New York City.

Anyway, I bought them and mounted up a Simmons WTC 6.5-20x50mm on my new .223 ultra barrel. Rings seem well made, and I have plenty of hammer clearance. I had to do a lot of thinning on the objective lens cap to get it to fit between the AO bell and the barrel though. (but I'd rather do that than use an even taller ring set)

I'm thinking about putting the 4-12 mildot back on my air rifle and getting something else for my 280 Handi. Thinking about a 2.8-10 Aetec, new ones are about $120 and I can get a refurb for $90. Either that or put my $50 4-12 Bushnell on it until I find a really big bargain on something good. What are Swift Premiers going for these days?

I just got my Aetec from ebay.  Perfect condition, BRAND NEW for $104 plus $10 shipping.

Seller was great to work with.

If you buy one tell him it was reccomended by marlinman53 (my ebay name)  I get nothing, just want him to know I appreciate a good seller.

If this scope works as good as it looks I'm a happy boy.

Mitch:

Seems your Wally World is better stocked than those around here...I've only seen the steel Weaver 4x4 at my local sporting goods store...their going for around $29.00 + tax....and I'm thinking about getting a pair of them for my new Whelen to mount a Leupold Vari X 3 in them...do these look like they'll hold up...and do they need to be lapped to make them true?   Just curious...I took off a set of the Aluminum Leupold Rifleman high set and boy was I in for a shock...looks like the front 1/16" of the front ring was chewed up and the back 1/16" of the rear ring the same way...it's like someone took a rat-tail file and swiped both rings at a 45 deg angle ....I can't figure out how this happened...or when...........

do these look like they'll hold up...and do they need to be lapped to make them true?

They looked OK, and the scope seemed to lay flat in them before I put the four caps on. I don't have an alignment rod, or even a 6" piece of 1" drill rod. I suppose one could check ring alignment with a 20mm shotgun scope, but all my scopes have bells at both ends. If I had an unmarked Vari-X-III I'd grab a set of Burris Signature Z with the plastic inserts to keep it unmarked. I've got no qualms mounting a scope I bought used for $75 on a light recoiling .223 with the $9 Weavers except for the "made in ComChi" part.
Back in April, WalMart had ONE PAIR of high Weavers in stock, the ones with the steel strap that hooks on one side and screws on the other. Now the fall stock is in, and those made in USA classics are history, except for the see through stuff and shotgun kits.
