Bad news about the clearshot
« on: August 29, 2004, 11:38:53 PM »
I told you all about the new stand for bowhunters that summit has coming out this year. It's the clearshot. For whatever reason BPS and Cabelas haven't started carrying it yet. I called summit and they gave me a dealer that carries their stands. Unfortunately, the y can't get it either since their dist. can't order it. Well, so much for that    It's a real innovative climber , but I can't find anyone who has it in stock. I would call summit but they would tack on the shipping costs and that is no good in my book. Someone  here in NC ought to have it, but it's almost bow season and O guess I will have to rely on my warren and sweat light stand (only 17 lbs)and keep standing up ever so often. that really stinks. You would think that if you have a new item you would try a little harder to advertise it. :x

whoever the dealer is will add the shipping too. You just dont see it in the cost. A call might get you a better deal than you think

Well, an email did the trick. I emailed summit and they said that usually a new product has a problem sometimes. But they told me (customer service ) that they would be more than happy to send me one with no problem, just 170.00 plus 11.00 for shipping   :-D  :) I guess they want my business.

Climbing stands have always scared the crap out of me.   Call me chicken, but I just don't trust them.  Heck this season I'm hunting out of a 15' ladder stand and because it has no rail I'm half shaking when I climb out of the thing.  I would use a tripod but the area that I hunt is a bit too thick to place one in.

I've hunted out of a portable stand exactly twice, once out of a hang on using screw in steps to get up to and hang it and the other time from a climber, neither time did I ever feel like getting more than 15 feet above terra firma. And after reading the number one reason for hunter fatalities and injuries, decided I didn't need to go aloft to hunt deer. I gave both stands to a young hunter who promised me he'd buy a good saftey harness with leg straps and to use it! I now use natural elevated stands to hunt when I can find em, or just still hunt.

I've hunted out of a couple strap on tree stands and more than a couple home built wood ones, some being a couple 2x4's of wood, some being a mini tree house.  None of them made me feel particularly safe because they weren't 100% sturdy and swayed in the wind.

Well this year, seeing how my best deer habitat is so grown up I can't see 10 feet infront of me.  I sit on the ground and have been stomped at, huffed at, heard them pass gas, pea, etc, and I can't see them to shoot them.  The only way to hunt it was to go up.  So this past weekend I bought a two person ladder stand.  The extra room will let me reposition for those 12+ hour stints in the woods.  The feet floor is 12' high.  I placed it against a tree that is on a high spot along a good sized creek, 20 yards from the water, with the ground sloping down 10 feet from the base of the tree to the water.  So I'm 12' above the ground, but 22' above the water level.  There are tons of deer trails and I'm currently cutting a few shooting lanes through the trees.

The tree I put the ladder stand against is 45+" in diameter, 12 feet in circumference, BIIIIG oak tree (and that's 45" across at 12 feet up, it's bigger at the base).  I have some bigger oak trees yet (and bigger walnut trees - $$$$) but they didn't have this strategic of a location.  The straps that came with the stand didn't come close to going around the tree so I used some big straps I use for strapping down small farm equipment to trailers and pulled the stand in tight to the tree.  It's not going anywhere.

It's 100 % sturdy.  The 45+" diameter tree has zero sway in the wind, and the shear size behind me helps block view of me until the deer are beside me, although with the two person width of the stand I can lean over the peek around.

I feel safe and secure up there.  Oh, and there's a bar infront of me that folds back for getting in and out.  It's more $$$ than a standard single person stand, but I think it's worth it.

I have the next two of three stand spots picked as well.  I hope to get one stand per year and put them up.  The next stand will be across the creek and I don't know yet where it is going.  The other two will be on the same side of the creek just farther down.  One on another 40+" diameter oak and another on a 50+" diameter walnut.

Bigger stand (also metal, not alloy) and bigger tree, guess this year bigger is better for me.

later,

MG I have the same apprehensions about climbing tree stand. I bought two of the old Baker climbers when they first came out. You kn ow, the ones where you had to hug the tree to climb because thay had not developed the hand climber yet. I got real smart one day and thought I would try the stand out on a creosote telephone pole.  I got about 6 feet off the ground and down it came. My chest and stomach looked like a bear had taken several swipes at me. Now I have one ladder stand that seldom gets used and a ground blind. But I build my on blinds on-site a lot more than I use these.

I have a Summit Viper that and weigh about 250 lbs. As long as the tree I pick is the right diameter I have never felt uncomfortable. The reason that I picked the Summit is they come with a full safety harness and I have never climbed without it. But If I am going to set a stand up in an area that I will hunt regularly I either use a ladder stand or ground blind that I set up ahead of time. If an occasional hunting area is not to grown up I will use a pop up blind and still hunt from the ground.

Well, I got on the cell phone this morning and talked to the customer service guy by the the name of tim brewer and ordered one . It's probably the first time that I've actually followed through on something and didn't settle for something else. Should have it before next friday. And since the 8th is my b-day what a nice little something for me, huh? :-D  :)    :D  :toast: These people at summit were very courteous too.
My take on summit is they grab a tree very well, better than any other stand I know, and that makes me feel good. I have a viper xls for my gun hunting and going to get the stirrups for it this weekend after I get off work.
