Bulltrout and Dolly Fly
« on: August 19, 2004, 05:15:48 PM »
I just started fishing for Bulltrout and Dollys in the interior of Bc and was wondering,if anyone of you can give me some advise on what Fly to use on those two species,as my success is somewhat limited, right now. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, but I can't help you with that one. I've always wanted to fish up north, but haven't been that way yet. Hopefully one of the other guys around here has a suggestion or 2 for you.

Ask your local game warden what minnow type fish are native to the streams you intend to fish and then tie some streamers to match.
streamers will work when nothing else will.

A Carey Special will take Brook trout like crazy and since Brookies are related to Bulltrout and Dollys I would give them serious try.   In fact, I use a Carey Special for about 80% of the fishing I do.   It can be tied in many different colors and materials and will catch pan fish, bass and trout.   It will work in lakes or streams and even salt water so I never leave home without them.

I also use almost any fly with Peacock Hurl on it (like a coachman) with great success for the Brook Trout we have here in Washington State.   I have even tied up a Carey with a Peacock body.   Since we are not that far away from each other I would give them both a try and see that you think.   I hook but can’t keep a lot of the Dollys (not allowed here) but then that isn’t much of a problem as I mostly catch and release anyway.

Tight Lines.

PS: The Carey Special was originally invented for use in BC waters so it should do the trick for you very well indeed.

BIG WHITE STREAMERS!!!!  I use a size 1 hook minimum, and love to make a big head, usually from wool.  I will use pike flies on occasion.  I love the big aluminum dumbells for eyes, making the eye prominent, and they help to weight the fly down.  Happy hunting!!
