Author Topic: Ruger no. 1 RSI in 30-06? (Read 1457 times)

Anybody have one of these in 30-06? I'm thinking of getting one for deer, elk, bear out to 300-350 yards max. Will the '06 perform adequately at that range with a short 20" barrel? Also if anybody can clue me in on recoil in the RSI in this caliber I would appreciate it (I'm currently hunting with ruger 77MKII in 7mm mag).

I have had one in 30-06 in the past. Loved the rifle, handles great and is compact. The recoil is not bad. With handloads and IMR 4895 the rifle pushed more than kicked. A friend of mine refused to shoot it, then after baggering him so long, he tried it to shut me up; He couldn't get enough of shooting it. The 20" barrel doesn't give up to much, especially with handloads.

Thanks for the response. I've been debating between buying one in 30-06 or 7x57.

I bought one in 243. I would have preferred 7x57. I would have considered 30-06 because of the weght of the rifle.

I wonder how much trouble it would be to rebarrel to 7x57. Would getting a barrel be hard? Factory or a custom barrel?

The 7x57 would be the ultimate cartridge to go with that Mannlicher stock-----but for your stated purposes----I'd go .30-06.

I had a Browning Micro in .308----using factory loads-----that would buck pretty good----nothing intolerable----but she let you know she was there-----the International should be similar in .30-06.

As for re-barreling-----when you figure the time---trouble and cost-----you would be better off just getting another rifle.

Why not get a 7-57 to go with your .243-----and then have 2 with characteristics that you know like the back of your hand???

i have a no 1 rsi in 30/06 i use it for deer up here in northern ny.with handloads i am shooting 3/4 inch groups at 100 yds.furthest kill so far was a five pointer at 165 yds.we don't have alot of long range shooting.most deer we kill here are well within 75 yds.the rsi is great to carry being compact but is a little on the heavy side.this year i started carrying a custom barreled encore{50 alskan}its probably a pound lighter than the ruger.although certainly not as attractive.i use a 165 gr seirra gameking hollow point boat tails using 44 grns of 4064.i don't know what the bullet speed is ,my next purchase is going to be a chronograph.a gunsmith freind told me that the general rule of thumb is 100 fps per inch of barrel lenght difference.or 400 fps less for 20" than a 24",personally i don't think a critter is gonna notice 400 fps.just my 2 cents worth.
