Thanks! How do you like your Sako? Is there diffrent Sako bases that fit certain models or do they fit all Sako's? I know i will need bases for a long action & will need them to be extended. Thanks.....Hunter
How do I like my Sako? Well, they're my favorite rifle without a doubt and I've owned a little of everything except for Weatherby. I just recently bought the vaunted pre-64 Winchester Model 70 and that hasn't changed my position, I still prefer the Sako 75's.
As far as the bases are concerned, I don't know if the Optilocks fit the older model Sakos (I believe they will fit some models), but I'm certain the bases are action specific. Both of my 75s are action length V, so all of my Optilocks (I've got 3 sets) can be used on either rifle.
The Optilocks are nice, I especially like the insert, but there are a couple of nagging things about them that I don't particularly care for. First is the height. They're just a tad too high for my taste, although I've pretty much gotten used to it. Second, and this is my main gripe, the hex head ring screws are awful. If you mount a scope once and leave it, you won't have a problem with them, but if you change scopes just a couple or three times, the heads of these screws strip out and you won't be able to tighten them enough. Then, when you order replacements from the factory, they charge you $4.00 for EACH screw. That really gripes me. They need to switch to a TORX head screw.
As I mentioned before, I've got Conetrols on one of my Sakos. Although these don't have the recoil limiter pin like the Optilocks, I'm confident they'll stay put. So far they've been rock solid. With these I was able to mount my scope lower to the barrel (1/16" clearance versus 3/8"). I'm going to give them a couple of years to see how they hold up and if they do okay I might put them on my other 75 too. I like they way they look.
