Please share. I am really interested in any sightings in the states of Kentucky and Tennessee but welcome all.

I have not actually seen one in the flesh, but have seen a number of photos and tapes.  Also many, many eyewitness reports.  In my area of central/western N.C., the majority are black in color.  In the mountains, they are gray and tan in the coastal area.

I saw my first lion here in the UP of Michigan in the late '70s. There was no doubt as to what it was either. I can still see the big head and the long curled tail as it prepared to cross a road. Now to the present. I regularly see lion tracks in the area of the camp. The tracks are from a full grown animal, since they are approximately 4" across. I did see tracks from a juvenile last deer season too. The MI DNR doesn't acknowledge the existence of the lions here, but they exist nonetheless. MI VHNTR

I recently talk to a County Sherrif in central Va...he claimsd to have seen a Cougar that was 8 ft from tip of tail to front of nose.
There have been rumors of sightings in a few of the counties that are located in the foothills and Mts of Va.

My father saw a black one up here in northern WI while he was fishing about 20 years ago! he had a fish on the bank, and heard it in the woods. It let out a blood curdeling kind or growl. he went to investigate,(yes he was kinda crazy back then) and met it coming down the trail in the dark. said it was about 10" from him as he shined a flashlight down the length of the big cat. It was crouched ready to pounce, but the light in its face made it turn and take off. Lucky!  There have been several reports of cougars in my erea in recent years, and even with pictures presented The DNR refuses there existance here! Recenty a fella right on the outskirts of town had one attack one of his horses. He "took out the trash",  the dnr denies there exsistance here, but threatens to fine the disturbing of them under any conditions!? Yeah, Thats the DNR for ya! $$$ :)

I can remember a time when the game comission denied coyotes ever being in PA. As for me we had one go across a field on my cousins farm in Delaware County NY. Also saw pictures of tracks in the snow that were confirmed to be Mountain Lion from a landowner in Tompkins County that I worked with. She saw it but by the time she went back in the house and got her camera all she had were tracks to take pictures of.>John

Yep, saw one in South Carolina in 19 and 75.  I was hunting deer and hog in a state hunting area, was hiding out behind a range berm sitting on a trail and along comes Mr. Panther/Mountain Lion/Puma.  Tawny coloured with a black spot on the end of his tail.  We locked eyes for a bunch of seconds and then he lit out into the swamp.  Mikey.

I live in the northeastern part of WV. Preston county to be exact. I have seen two so far and both time my Dad was with me. The sightings occurred in 1984 and 1985. In 85 we had a drought in the summer and me and my Dad were driving home from town it was around 10:00 or 10:30 and a mountain loin croosed the road in front of us. He had to be going to the river to drink because all the little streams running of the hills were dried up and the river was really low. To this day the DNR denies them being here but me and Dad know exactly what we saw and it was not our imagination. The sighting in 84 was on the mountain to the right of the road we were on in 85. The 84 sighting was really cool because it was in broad daylight. We were going down a old logging road that crossed a small creek bed and you had to turn left and drive up the creek bed a ways to get to another road that keep going on the other side. The mountain loin crossed the creek bed in front of us. There was no doubt what it was. Both of the cats were about the same size and I'm guessing in the 130 to 150 lb range with long tails that looked to be 1 1/2 in diameter. Took a friend bow hunting about 10 years after that and he told me that he seen 3 large black house cats playing up on this one ridge across from him. The distance was about 70 to 75 yards. I said playing and he said yes It was like 3 over grown kittens playing. I said their are no housecats up here and I have never seen full grown house cats play like kittens. I then told him what I thought they were and went to look but they were gone. Probally a good thing because all we had were our bows.

I live in northern KY and we had a sighting reported to the game warden about a month ago by either a telephone co. or electric co worker ( cant remember witch  ).  Dont know if it is tru or not but it is in an area that I hunt and know people that live there and they have not seen anything yet or had any pets or livestock missing yet. I guess time will tell.

Have never seen one but usually get credible reports every couple year.
I think these cats might range 225 Sq miles as compared to 10 to 15 for the Coyote.

I appreciate all of the replys. I have been told by quite a few people that they have been seeing a Cougar here in South Central Kentucky and North Central Tennessee. I have confronted a Warden in both States and as a few of yall have mentioned, they both said "There ain't no big cats around here, but if there is and you kill one, it's a federal offense, unless it is in an act of self defense."

I have been told about a black one and a reddish tan one...

Please keep em coming and also leave any pictures available.

Thanks.  :D

Back in 1974-75 we had one on our property (126 acres) in N.E. Alabama. It took one or more of our calfs. I believe my Aunt saw it, still remember the men going after it on horseback. They didn't have any luck getting it. I was about 9 at the time. I also remember news of a black cat in Michigan back in the mid to late eighties. I believe it was around Howell. There was descrepancies about whether it was a dark Cougar or an actual Panther.

I saw one in the early 80's while hiking the App trail in Virginia.  It came up about 20 feet from me.  As soon as it saw me, it was gone...

There are a few here in East Tennessee, mostly in the Townsend/Cades Cove area. There are some large deer herds in the park; I imagine that's why they're here.

I've heard tell of them in the Forks of the River area and around Strawberry Plains, too.

Black bear are running around Blount & Sevier county. There's lots of game coming out of the mountains lately.

I didn't see them. I was told by my mother and father that they saw two "very large cats" with long tails about 300 yards from them.

The animals were crossing a cut soybean field that has forest surrounding it on three sides, and a public road on the 4th side. It's a very long field...about 900 or 1000 yards. They had stopped their car on the public road, and walked down the left side of the field for about 600 or 700 yards. My father was hunting deer.  He had a tacit understanding with the farmer about shooting the deer on his (the farmer's) land because deer can strip a soybean field if you have enough of them. My father intended to "take his stand" at the back end of the field near the back left corner of the field and wait for deer to emerge near sunset.

At about the 600 yard mark, my father reached out and grabbed my mother and asked her if she could see something moving ahead. She says she looked up from watching for ruts and mud, and immediately saw what he meant because the two creatures were jumping around, play fighting, and swiping at each other like mated animals or siblings. According to my father, the two animals seemed to be frolicking, not hunting. This continued for about two minutes while my mother and father hunkered down and watched.

My father said that they must have suddenly sensed their presence because they both immediately ran away from my mother's and father's position. Ran underneath a barbed wire fence at the back of the field and disappeared into the woods.

My father and mother both were very unnerved by this encounter. My dad decided that he'd go hunt somewhere else that season...mostly because he often hunted in the late afternoon, and would frequently be after dark tracking or hauling any kills that day, or walking back empty handed after it got too dark to see. That year he only hunted in daylight hours.

Now, as I say, I didn't see the creatures. However, I did see both my mother and father when they returned from their hunt that day, and they were both very excited, emotional, and stammering in their speech. What I also remember was that they were both very very pale. SOMETHING had honestly scared them. This was no practical joke for my benefit.

I've hunted somewhat over the years, but I'm not a knowledgable hunter. My father, on the other hand, has hunted all his life, and is accomplished with judging distances and sizes, and has made some quite incredible medium range shots with open sights on moving targets. He swears they were large animals, not housecats that were 30 yards away and somehow visually magnified.

Variously, my father described the coloration as tannish brown (from dad), or blond (from mom). Both agreed that they moved rapidly in sudden starts and stops. My mother said they looked to her to be exactly like the mountain lions she had seen on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.

I can't claim it myself..but my parents say they saw them and I believe them.

Time period on this sighting was mid-1980's. Clay County Mississippi, at a soybean field close to the Tombigbee Waterway, near Barton's Ferry. Nearest towns are either West Point or Columbus, Mississippi.

where abouts are you at in Eastern TN?  i'm in Jefferson County...

South Knox. I can walk about 1/8-1/4 mile to Forks of the River WMA. I actually have to go out of my way to get a deer tagged. :) The only problem with FOTR is that it's shotgun only.

We have about 5 acres between Ijams and FOTR.  I have a seasonal chair set up out back for squirrel. :)

I work in Alcoa, and spend 25-30 minutes driving each way looking for places to scout. It's gonna be a good deer season here. Lots of boar too.

I've seen 7 here in SW Va. in the last 20 years. Twice, I had a witness with me, so I know I'm not crazy(although untill recently the wardens claimed I was).

I've actually seen the majority of them(5 to be exact) just in the last 6 years, with 2 sightings in the winter of 2001-2002 within a week. I'm not talking about a "maybe it might have been" sighting either time. I've had a few "maybe?" sightings too, but these 7 were all either observed very close up, or through optics.

I haven't(to my knowlege) actually called one in, but it's strange that since I started calling predators a few years ago, now all of a sudden I'm seeing more cougars. Every sighting I've had lately has been after a calling session, usually either walking back to the truck, or within a short distance after pulling off from where I'm parked. It's been split about 50/50 between night time calling, and day time so I guess they're not as nocturnal as bobcats are.

Last winter I watched one dragging a small deer up the side of a rocky bluff beside a creek. This was in the night, I'm guessing around 2-3 am. I rounded a curve in the truck, and caught eyes across the creek maybe 150 yards off. When I came on around where I was about even with them, and within about 50 yards straight across the creek, I shined my spot light on him. I don't know if he actually killed the deer, or just found it laying, but he was definately dragging it off with him. I watched him through my rifle scope(I know, I know!!! LOL) for I guess about 5 minutes or more as he drug it on up over the rocks, and out of sight. Me sitting across from him with the truck running didn't seem to even interest him, which surprised me quite a bit.

For the record, and in case anybody is interested, every definate sighting I've had has been in Carrol Co. Virginia, with most being in the Big Reed Island Creek area not too far from Dugspur. I've also run across tracks on quite a few occasions from the Camp Powatan area of Pulaski Co. on through towards Floyd Co. and of course back into Carrol Co. With as much area as these cats are supposed to require, I'm figuring I may be seeing the same cat/cats on different occasions.

I'm luckier than most because I'm not working from about mid November till about mid March, so naturally, I spend nearly every waking moment in the mountains or fields during that time. I guess my luck with seeing cougars is simply due to the odds being better for me, with time actually spent out there, combined with sounding like dinner.

Hunting in Vermont since '73 and me and my older brother have been walkers not sitters and we would walk for hours into the upper elevations were most don't venture.   One time I seen bear tracks in the fresh snow it was a mother and a cub  right near these tracks were a set of mountainlion tracks.  I had a pocket camera with me and i sent a pic to a mountainlion sighting group and it was confirmed a mountainlion track. Now my story gets even better a few years ago near my camp I was eating supper at my neighbors house which is on the other side of my valley away from my camp and we left around 9pm as we started up the road we saw going into the tall grass a very large mountainlion(180/200lbs)  the very next day at my camp which borders on two sides by national forest on the ridge about my camp there it was growling at my son who was outside gassing up his dirtbike.  When I heard it with him I grabbed my 357mg handgun and went outside to see if its comming closer or what well it left and i never seen it again.  But keep in mind its still there just out of my site.  Now about two years ago me and my older son where bear hunting in the national forest in another part of it far away from all my other sightings and we were on a ridge above an apple orchard and walking parallel to the dirt access road when we heard something clawing really loud.  We didn't think of it at the time but when we crossed into the apple orchard access trail I seen fresh claw marks going up a very large white birch tree about 35 to 40'  I think it went up to see where we were because it could hear us talking but couldn't see us?  I know they are there and one must proceed with caution and just be aware of them all the time and avoid ambush points like overhead ledges. I was walking down my national forest access road once and had something above me breaking branches on an over head ledge I just backed up away from it but I never saw it.  You must  alert all the time. I heard there in CT. were  i live too but I have seen everything but so far while fishing but in time I'm sure I'll see one here too.    BigBill

Felis Concolor
« Reply #23 on: October 02, 2004, 03:50:09 PM »
Felis Concolor; Puma, Mountain Lion, Cougar, Panther, Painter, Catamount and other local names, was a resident over all of North America, excepting the Arctic, mostly in the western mountains, the southwest and western portions of the midwest now, a small population still is known in Florida, Alabama and Georgia, very few left, these are Felis Concolor Coryi subspecies.
Florida has been trying to add some Texas cats to the gene pool to reduce inbreeding problems.
Several people in Arkansas have been reporting depredations of livestock and domestic pets in the last 10-15 years, however , don't worry , the Arkansas fish and game people are positively sure there are none in the state, no matter what tracks and pictures are presented.
The secretive nature of all cats makes it quite possible they are all over everywhere.
I have spent much time in the field all over Texas and in over 60 years have seen Puma, Ocelot, Margay, Jagurandi ,Bobcat and Jaguar.
The last is in the class of many of your sightings, I saw a Jaguar hung on a fence on the road from Big Spring to Moss Creek Lake in 1951, every wildlife authority I have mentioned this to have politely or otherwise told me I was -seeing things- couldn't tell a Jaguar from a Coyote- saw a Bobcat- or was just flat lieing.
Nevertheless, I saw it and so did my parents, who told me what it was.
It was hung by it's pelvis , with the hind legs tied down in front and the head and shoulders were on the ground, this was a regular 5 strand barbed wire fence, about 40" to the top, never seen a bobcat or coyote that long ,it was there at least 3 months before the pieces finally disappeared.
We went to the lake at least every 2 weeks, so I saw it several tlmes.

About 10 to 15 years ago, the Baltimore newspaper ran an article about a sighting in the middle of the road around early am in west Baltimore County. Interstate 83 which is within a mile of the sighting, would be an ideal place for a cat to travel. The deer are shoulder to shoulder throughout the entire county and the highway has a minimum of a 100 yard wooded buffer on both sides.

I have a friend who keeps me posted about mountainlion sightings and she sent me a story about a collared mountainlion who traveled over 600 straight line miles before getting hit and killed then they checked the collar and called who was doing the testing and they found this out.  The animal was in great healthy condition so it ate good too along the way so that scary to see something as large as this big predator travel over 600 miles?? And her ain't eaten at McDonalds/BurgerKing along the way too.

In my kids condo complex my son has seen a mountainlion along with my wife and daughter too.  Then two blocks away it was reported to the local cops and they seen it too.  Now in the complex there are pets missing too now.  The funny part of it is not to stir up trouble about the sightings no one is told about it, its hushed up and everyone is in danger for this big cat is all over the place there too.  These cats can be nearby and we never know it because there so elusive i've only noticed it because of the tracks i found in the snow.  That kind of raised an awareness really quickly the hunter can become the hunted if were not aware they are out there and accept it that they do exsist.  If i was a deer hunter i wouldn't sleep in my stand anymore.

jlk,
What county did you have your sightings in?

I have heard many reports of lion sightings here in AL, but I have not seen any myself.  There is a life size mount of a VERY LARGE wolf at a local taxidermist's.  It was taken less than 20 miles from the center of the largest metro area in the state.  I also know of a black bear cub that was seen dead on the side of the road in a suburb of that same metro area.  If there are wolves and bears in the county with the largest population in the state, I'll bet there are lions in the many hundreds of miles of forest in our state.  I did hear of a lion that was trapped by Game & Fish out of a neighborhood close to Huntsville AL., but I have no way to verify that.

jlk,
Thanks for the info.  I live in the Birmingham area, but I hunt WMA's all over the state.  I am a fairly large fellow and I am usually carrying a climbing tree stand while I am hunting, so I don't think I am likely to have a problem myself.  I do however have an 11 year old who will be hunting with me occasionally this year.  I will definitely be extra cautious and alert while he is with me, though I realize the chances of an encounter are still exceedingly low.  The old "ounce of prevention" thing is usually more than sufficent to avoid predator problems, but making sure you have a "pound of cure" (preferably in 240gr increments) at hand never hurts either.  I try to never venture far into the bush without a little predator "medicine" handy.

Thanks again,
Roll Tide
